Mangalore University inter-collegiate football tourney gets underway

Puttur, Sept 23: ‘B Sadananda & Vamana’ Memorial Mangalore University Inter Collegiate Foot Ball Tournament jointly organised by Department of Physical Education of Mangalore University and St Philomena College Puttur inaugurated on St Philomena play grounds on September 23, 2019.

The MLA of Puttur constituency Sanjeeva Matandoor inaugurated this four days tournament. He said, ‘India is country which has occupied second place in the size of population at the world level. However, in the field of sports and games our achievements are insignificant. The sports persons must treat great sports achievers as their role model and go head. The active participation in sports and games is very helpful to our physical and mental health.’

The Chairman of D.K. District Football Association Mr D M Aslam participated as the chief guest and expressed the best wishes.

The Campus Director Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of St Philomena PU College Rev. Fr Vijay Lobo and Assistant Youth Empowerment and Sports Officer of Puttur Mr Mamachan M participated as the guests of honour.

On this occasion, Former Weightlifter, Alumnus Mr Krishnappa Gowda and Former Athlete, Alumnus Mr Sajjan Kumar K were felicitated for the tremendous achievement in the field of sports.

The Correspondent Very Rev. Fr Alfred J Pinto delivered presidential address.

The members of Performing Arts Association presented the prayer song. The Dean of Commerce Prof. Maxim Carl welcomed the gathering. The Physical Education Director Mr Prakash D’souza proposed the vote of thanks. The Physical Education Director Mr Rajesh Moolya was present on this occasion. The Assistant Professor of Business Administration Mr Prashanth Rai compered the programme.

In the Mangalore Zone, 33 teams affiliated to Mangalore University have reported to participate in this prestigious championship.

Bengaluru, Apr 22: In order to infuse confidence among people to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, Karnataka government on Wednesday launched a helpline 'Apthamitra' with an exclusive toll free number and a mobile app, aimed at providing required medical advice and guidance for those in need.

The help line and app was launched by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa in the presence of senior Ministers and officials of the department.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Yediyurappa said that the help line was need at this crucial juncture. “If anyone has symptoms of Coronavirus, they can call the helpline from their home, get medical advice or assistance and get their doubts cleared. 

People who call to know the symptoms, an expert team of doctors will advice on what to do next.”

Belagavi, Mar 7: Karnataka Urban Development Minister B A Basavaraj on Saturday said that government would a take decision very soon regarding conducting city corporations election in the state.

Speaking with the media after review meeting at Belagavi city corporation (BCC) here he further said that delimitation exercise of the wards has to be done followed by reservations.

The minister stated that discussions would be held with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and would arrive at a decision to conduct the election in about a month’s time.

Dharwad, Jan 5: Hameed Khan, a noted sitar exponent and descendant of renowned sitarist Ustad Rahimat Khan, passed away at his residence here on Saturday night.

He was 69 and survived by wife Fareeda, son Mohsin Khan (a musician) and daughter Arma Khan (an artist).

Hameed Khan taught sitar at Karnatak University’s college of music and also at the family-run music school ‘Bharateeya Sangeeta Vidyalaya’. Several of his disciples who were foreign nationals helped him establish ‘Kalakeri Sangeet Vidyalaya’ at Kalakeri village near Dharwad, which provides music lessons to the deprived.
