Mangalore University leads campaign against plastic pollution

Mangaluru, Sept 19: Mangalore University  (‘Mangala Yojane’ - Village Adoption Programme), under the auspices of  Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education – Govt of India, has organized a public awareness campaign against plastic pollution. The programme was conducted to observe ‘Swachhata Pakhwada’, an initiative of Swachh Bharat Mission, in Konaje and Phajeer Grama Panchyat limits. Students and research scholars of M.Sc. Biosciences and Environmental Science, teaching and non-teaching faculty members of various Departments of the University went on a parade with slogans and distribution of handbills along with the eco-friendly handbag to sensitive general public on single use plastic free and effective management of plastic disposal.

Prof. A. M. Khan, Registrar, Mangalore University released the handbills and addressed the gathering, “Chemical released from plastic items are one of the major causative factors  for  high rate of cancers today,  and plastic wastes  also act as breeding centres for mosquitoes  spreading  contagious diseases such malaria, dengue, chikungunya, etc. It is inevitable to make our environment free from plastic pollution to safeguard our own health and nature”.

Mr. Nazar Sha Pattori, president of Konaje Grama Panchayath handed over the eco-friendly bag and said in his speech that before 1947 our ancestors have fought against British for the independence; today we have to fight against very dangerous pollutant to make the Swacch Bharat dream come true. Public support is very much needed to make our country single use plastic free and reduce the pollution.

Dr. Prashantha Naik, Chairman, Dept of Biosciences and Convenor of the event delivered the preamble of the program and welcomed the gathering. The Single use plastic items such as  carry bags, plates, cups, straw, spoons, water bottle, etc. which constitute 40% of plastic products are major causative factors for plastic pollution and associated health  hazards. We need to stop using single use plastic things to mitigate the negative impact of plastic pollution. Dr. Tharavathy N.C., Coordinator- Environmental Science PG program, proposed the vote of thanks and said that because of our mistakes polluting the nature, not only we ourselves suffer, but also the lives of other organisms are in danger.

Members of Konaje Grama Panchayath,  including Smt. Muttu  N. Shetty, Mr. Achutha Gatti, Mr. A. Ravindra, Mr.  Harishchandra Shettigar, Smt. Vedavathi Gatti. Mr. Mohammed Iqbal were present. Mr. Narasimiah N., Dr. Sharath Chandra K., Mrs. Laveen K.B., Mr. Diwakar M.S., Mr. Chaniyappa led the procession.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: With rains in several parts of Karnataka amid Covid-19 pandemic, state Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar on Thursday asked the people to maintain caution and contact the Health department helpline in case of any symptoms.

"There is heavy rain in several districts of the state's coastal, Malnad and north interior regions. People have to observe utmost caution during these rains amid corona infections. In case of any symptoms like fever, cough and cold immediately call the health department helpline 104," Sudhakar tweeted.

As of August 5 evening, cumulatively 1,51,449 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 2,804 deaths and 74,679 discharges.

Among the districts where the new cases were reported, Bengaluru urban tops the list accounting for 64,881 cases.

Regarding Bengaluru, Sudhakar said, there are 4,276 beds across 11 Covid care centres in Bengaluru.

"As of today morning, 936 of them i.e., 27.79 percent are vacant. Out of the 3,346 patients, 306 patients are due for discharge today," he said in another tweet.

Aimed at availing beds at Covid-19 hospitals for symptomatic patients and those in need, the government had decided to shift all asymptomatic patients to Covid care centres.

Bengaluru, May 16: At least 23 new COVID-19 positive cases have emerged in the past 19 hours, raising Karnataka''s tally to 1,079, a health official said on Saturday.

"New cases reported from Friday 5 p.m. to Saturday noon are 23," said the official.

Among the 1,079 cases, 548 are active and isolated in designated hospitals across the state, 494 patients got discharged and 36 died of the virus.

In the past 19 hours, cases spiked in Benglaluru Urban, the place hosting the highest number of coronavirus cases in the state.

Of the new cases, Bengaluru Urban reported 14 cases, followed by 3 in Hassan and Mandya, Ballari, Bagalkote, Davangere, Dharwad and Udupi, 1 each.

All the 14 cases, men, from Bengaluru Urban were secondary contacts of positive case 653.

All Hassan, Dharwad and Bagalkote cases had a history of inter-state travel to Mumbai, Maharashtra, India''s largest sufferer of Covid.

A 46-year-old man from Ballari had a travel history to Ahmedabad in Gujarat, another major COVID-19 hotspot state in India.

A 40-year-old man from Mandya had inter-district travel history to Kolar and Bengaluru.

A 1-year-old infant girl from Udupi had international travel history to Dubai.

Among the new cases, 15 are contacts of earlier cases.

Of the all cases, 20 are men and three women.

Only four of the 23 cases are above 50 and 18 below 40.

Of the 1,079 cases, 12 per cent patients were senior citizens, 66 per cent men and 34 per cent women with a discharge rate of 44 per cent.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: The Central Crime Branch-Bengaluru conducted raids at 35 locations in Hennur and Banaswadi areas on Tuesday morning and arrested seven foreign nationals without valid passports and visas.

The Crime Branch also recovered fake currency during the raid, which is currently underway, informed the police.
