Sharjah: Prestigious ‘Sharjah Award for Educational Excellence 2018-19’, is presented to the country's highest-rated students every year and this year it has been awarded to 9th Grade student Vibhali Shetty of our Our Own High School (girls) Sharjah.

Mangalurean Vibhali Shetty is the daughter of businessman father Prasad Shetty who runs Rajab Trading Company and mother Suraksha Prasad Shetty, who is a Design Manager and Senior Architect at Semac Consultants, Dubai. Father a native of Udupi and mother from Surathkal are currently residents of Sharjah.

The Sharjah Award for excellence was launched in 1994-95 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme council and Ruler of Sharjah.  This Award is the first educational award in the UAEwhich is focused to honor and recognize outstanding individuals in education field and promote a culture of excellence.

The Award ceremony was held at the Jawaher Reception & Convention Centre, Sharjah on 1st May 2019, presided by the Crown Prince of Sharjah, Sultan bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimiwho handed over the award to Vibhali Shetty. The members of the Royal Family and several other dignitaries were also present during the ceremony.

An ecstatic Vibhali said “I am excited to receive this award on the 25th year of the award cycle. My hard work made me achieve commendation in academics throughout the years. This has been accompanied by my passion for extracurricular activities such as dancing, singing, drawing and other skills like abacus and public speaking. The award made me realize that excelling in academics is not the only criteria of achievement in a student’s life.Sharjah award is a great motivation and a symbol of encouragement. Winning the award gives me great pleasure and satisfaction. I sincerely thank His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah for sowing the seed into each and every student’s mind about excellence in education”

New Delhi, Jan 19: Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Sunday asserted that every state assembly has the constitutional right to pass a resolution and seek the amended Citizenship Act's withdrawal, but if the law is declared constitutional by the Supreme Court then it will be problematic to oppose it.

His remarks came a day after he had said there is no way a state can deny the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) when it is already passed by the Parliament.

"I believe the CAA is unconstitutional. Every State Assembly has the constitutional right to pass a resolution and seek its withdrawal. When and if the law is declared to be constitutional by the Supreme Court then it will be problematic to oppose it. The fight must go on!" Sibal said in a tweet.

His remarks on the CAA at the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF) on Saturday had caused a flutter as several non-BJP governments, including Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra, have voiced their disagreement with the CAA as well as National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

"If the CAA is passed no state can say 'I will not implement it'. It is not possible and is unconstitutional. You can oppose it, you can pass a resolution in the Assembly and ask the central government to withdraw it.

"But constitutionally saying that I won't implement, it is going to be problematic and going to create more difficulties," said the former minister of law and justice.

The Centre’s step-motherly attitude towards Kannadigas stranded in the Gulf countries in general and Saudi Arabia in particular has prompted the Kannadigas to resort social media campaign once again.

A couple of weeks ago, Twitterati had launched a campaigned to bring back Kannadidags stranded in Saudi Arabia. A variation of the hashtag #SaudiKannadigasNeedFlights trended today. 

Trend Setters India, which has taken the twitter campaign initiative, had urged the Kannadigas around the world to join the twitter storm at 4 p.m. IST on June 15, to exert pressure on the authorities concerned. Around 7 p.m. the hashtag began trending with thousands of tweets.

Millions of Kannadigas are working in Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. They contribute greatly to the Indian economy.

Even though government of India has launched Vande Bharat Mission for the repatriation of Indians stranded across the world, it has operated only a few flights from Saudi Arabia to Karnataka so far. Thousands of Kannadigas including pregnant women, elderly people, those who have lost jobs and those who need emergency medical care are still waiting for repatriation flights from Saudi Arabia to Mangaluru and Bengaluru.

Mangaluru, July 5: Two children died after getting trapped under the debris of a landslide which occurred at Banglagudde in Kaikamba on the outskirts of Mangaluru today.

The deceased are identified as Safwan (16) and Sahala (10).

The rescue teams including personnel from NDRF, fire service and police brought out the body after four hours of rescue operation.

According to sources, landslides occurred at 12:30 pm and of the five members, three ran out of the house. The two kids got trapped in the debris.

The heavy rain in the last two days has softened the soil of the hillock. An Auto-rickshaw, lorry and a bike too have buried under the soil.

It was said that caving in of the hillock continued even when the rescue operation was in progress, thus making the rescue operation difficult.

District-in-Charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary who visited the spot said two houses have been completely damaged and inmates of 14 houses that are facing the problem in the vicinity will be shifted to safer locations.
