Mangaluru: 10 held for duping MBBS seat aspirants

Mangaluru, Sept 10: The Mangaluru East police on Saturday arrested 10 persons for allegedly cheating a Delhi and a Rajasthan resident of MBBS seats in the A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre.

The police said the accused posed as employees of the Institute and assured Kamal Singh Rajpurohit, Delhi resident, and Mahendar, Rajasthan resident, of MBBS seats for their children. The accused took demand draft of Rs. 5.4 lakh each.

The police gave the names of the accused as Ajay Nayak Mukharji alias Kailash Prakash Maurya, 41 from West Bengal; Saurabh Gupta alias Divakar, 32, from Lucknow; Anoop Singh, 35, a native of Jharkhand, Amit Ranjan, 25, from Bihar; Swapan Biswas alias Mahesh Kumar, 54, from Kolkata; Rajeev Kumar, 30, from Hyderabad; Anil Tuljiram Samthani alias Jayesh Ranglani, 62, from Kolkata; Manish Kumar Shah, 30, Dhiraj Sharma, 30, and Sanjay Kumar Mahathoor, 26, from Jharkhand.

The police seized the two demand drafts, 20 mobile phones, two laptops, and other articles.

Kundapur, Apr 28: The local police have arrested two people for threatening and preventing an Associated Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers from discharging their duties during the lockdown.

Police said on Tuesday that the arrested are Sandeep Mesta and Mahesh Kharvi.

According to official sources, the health officials had put Sandeep under quarantine for 28 days.

However, he was seen wandering in the streets and ASHA worker C Laxmi warned him to stay indoors.

Irked by the warning Sandeep, along with his friend Mahesh Kharvi waylaid her and threatened to kill for objecting his movement.

Bengaluru, Jun 12: All the four candidates, including former prime minister H D Deve Gowda (JDS), and senior Congress leader Mallikarjna Kharge, on Friday were declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

Karnataka Assembly Secretary sources here said that all the four candidates, who were in the fray for as many berths, were elected after the last date of withdrawal of candidature ended on Friday.

Mau/ Kalaburagi, Mar 26: Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday asked lockdown violators in Mau to do push-ups and squats as a punishment.
In Karnataka's Kalaburagi, police personnel punished the violators of the lockdown.
In his address to the nation on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.
According to the Health Ministry, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases in India reached 606, including 43 foreign nationals.
