Mangaluru, Oct 24: Three college students who were allegedly procuring ganja under “buy four-get one free” offer and selling it to other students as well as the general public were arrested by the Anti-Rowdy Squad of the police hereon Monday.
The police gave the names of the accused as Shahin K. Ayub (21), son of Ayub, native of Kummanam, Kottayam district, Shehan Bashir (20), son of Bashir, native of Pathanamthitta district, and Sachin Pradeepan (20), son of Pradeepan, native of Mundayad, Kannur district, all in Kerala.
The accused are students of third year interior designing course with Srinivas College, Pandeshwar, here, the police said. They were staying in a rented accommodation on the fourth floor of a building on Arya Samaj Road at Balmatta.
Acting on a tip-off, the squad searched the room of the students and found 12 ganja packets kept ready for sale as well as unpacked ganja, together weighing about 400 g and worth abut Rs. 10,000. On inquiry, the students revealed that they had been procuring ganja from Kerala for the last year and selling it to students of their college as well as to others.
The supplier was Eshwaran, who also offered one packet free if they bought four packets. The police also seized mobile phones used by the accused. They handed over the accused as well as the seized material to the Mangaluru East Police Station.
A squad headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Rama Rao coordinated the operation. Commissioner T.R. Suresh and Deputy Commissioners Hanumantharaya and Uma Prashanth congratulated the personnel for the work. In the past about a week, the squad kept a watch on educational institutions from where a large number of complaints of sale and consumption of ganja were reported.
