Mangaluru: 4 including couple returning from Dubai held; gold worth Rs 1-cr seized

Mangaluru, Feb 11: The sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), nabbed two persons each at Mangaluru International Airport  and Mangaluru Junction Railway Station and seized gold worth over Rs 1 crore from them on Saturday.

A couple hailing from Kasaragod, were arrested at the Airport for trying to smuggle 2.13kgs of gold concealed in a specifically made abdominal belt worn by them under their clothes.

In a separate incident, two passengers who smuggled 16 gold biscuits from Nepal by concealing them in the inner pocket of their pants, were nabbed from a Kozhikode bound train at the railway station. 

Vinayak Bhat, deputy director, DRI Mangaluru regional unit, said that all the four all accused were produced before the jurisdictional chief judicial magistrate, Mangaluru on Sunday. Further investigations are in progress in both cases.

The DRI had received information about Kasaragod residents Hassan and Sameera arriving by Spicejet Flight SG-60 from Dubai to MIA, with undeclared gold. On arrival of the aircraft, the couple were identified and intercepted at customs green channel and subjected to thorough checking. During frisking, it was revealed that both were carrying skin coloured belts tied to their waist.

The belts were found to be concealed with heavy objects. On opening them it was found certain brown coloured rubber like compound was stuffed inside. The expert jeweller examined the compound and it was subsequently taken to gold testing extraction centre where under supervision of DRI officers and independent witnesses, gold was extracted. At the end, gold of 23.99 carat purity weighing 2137.04 gms was extracted from the said compound.

Their current market value was placed at around Rs 66 lakh, Vinayak Bhat said, adding DRI officers subsequently seized the contraband gold under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. The passengers who happened to be husband and wife were arrested and produced before the chief judicial magistrate, Mangaluru and were later released on conditional bail, Bhat said, adding DRI sleuths are investigating this modus operandi of smuggling gold into India

In another incident, two passengers travelling from Panvel to Kozhikode on Marusagar Express were nabbed at Mangaluru Junction Railway station. During their personal examination, the officers found heavy objects around the waist band of their trousers. On cutting open inside stitch of the waist band, 16 gold bars (eight gold bars each) were recovered. The duo Moideen and Samsudheen admitted gold bars recovered from their possession were of foreign origin.

They had smuggled it during their travel from Dubai to Kathmandu a few days ago. During interrogation, they added after getting cleared from Kathmandu International Airport they crossed land border at Birganj and entered India. Subsequently, they undertook several cut journeys by road and train and on Saturday, boarded Marusagar Express at Panvel. DRI officers seized 16 gold bars of foreign origin weighing 1865.6 grams valued at Rs 56,33,880 under mahazar.

Mangalore, May 30: The first chartered flight to the city of Mangalore, Karnataka in South India is scheduled to depart from the Ras Al Khaimah airport of UAE on June 1.

The SpiceJet flight, chartered by Praveen Shetty, chairman of the Fortune Group of Hotels and president of the Karnataka non-Resident Indian Forum (KNRI), will repatriate 105 staff members of the hotel group, who have been placed on leave, according to a statement issued here on Saturday.

Consul General of India to Dubai Vipul confirmed the reports and said the flight, which will depart at 0945 hrs, will carry home a total of 180 passengers.

Bengaluru, Jan 21: Controversial Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan will remain in state-syllabus textbooks in the next academic year (2020-21) too. But the government will form another committee to look at the subject afresh.

"Efforts are on to give textbooks and uniforms the day schools open next academic year. After a discussion with the CM, we decided to not make any changes in the textbooks for the upcoming academic year,"said primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar.

No political angle, says minister

However, we will form a committee to look into it again,” said the minister.

Three months ago, Madikeri MLA Appachu Ranjan had written to the minister seeking removal of contents on Tipu Sultan from Karnataka state syllabus books of classes 6,7 and 10. The minister said: “Appachu Ranjan is a five-time MLA. When he sent a letter, it’s my duty to seek an opinion on it. There’s no political angle here.”

Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) Chaiman Dr Sam Pitroda held video conference with senior IOC office bearers across Middle Eastern countries on 14th April 2020 to review the impact of COVID-19 pandemic among Indians residing in the region. Almost all speakers appreciated the efforts initiated and  implemented by  respective governments to contain spread of the deadly virus as well as measures taken towards welfare of the people affected by the lockdown. 

IOC Presidents, Mohammed Mansour - Bahrain, Abdullah Manjeri - Saudi Arabia, Dr J Ratan kunar - Oman and Girish kumar - Qatar, highlighted the quality treatment of patients and finacial aid provided by governments and other authorities. Bahrain IOC president Mansour , also  apprised about the 'Food for Needy' drive in Association with KHK Heroes foundation, initiated by HH Sheikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa and quality treatments as well as financial aid to local and expat residents.

Anura Mathai, IOC  Global Event Coordinator, spoke about certain problems of Indians in the UAE. IOC Middle East Convener, Mansoor Palloor, emphasised and requested IOC Chairman to urge Indian government to arrange immediate repatriation of indians stranded in Gulf countries. AICC Secretary, Himanshu Vyas, IOC Secretary Dr Arathi Krishna, Dr Arshi Malik (Abha), Mohiuddin Sirajudeen (Jeddah), Advocate Joseph Palathara (Dammam) Prasad Kodru, Jayati Maitra Ziyad Ahmed (Qatar) and Khursheed Alam (Gen Secretary- Bahrain) also apprised the participants about various issues relevant to the pandemic and suggested further initiatives to be undertaken. 

Dr Sam Pitroda briefed about sustained and consolidated efforts by all IOC members  during this unprecedented situation facing the world and assured that he would convey IOC  concerns to the government and try his best to ensure all possible help is made available to all needy Indians.
