Mangaluru: 8-year-old boy dies after getting trapped in lift

Mangaluru, Mar 27: In a heartrending tragedy, an eight-year-old boy lost his life after he was trapped between the floors in a lift at an apartment in the city today.

The four-storeyed building, Bharathi Heights, is located on fourth cross in Chilimbi area. Ironically, the victim’s parents work as security guards in the same apartment.

Police have identified the boy as Manjunath, son of Neelappa and Parvathi, both originally hailing from Hungundha taluk in Bagalkote. They had migrated to Mangaluru to earn a living. 

According to residents of the building, the Class 2 boy was playing in the lift while his sister was standing outside. They said at some point, the boy failed to close the door of the lift. 

Meanwhile, a resident from another floor called the lift. As a result, the boy was taken along with the lift, the door being still open. He was trapped between the two floors and he sustained critical injuries. Though he was rushed to a private hospital, doctors declared him brought dead.

Udupi, Feb 11: The three patients, including a child, who were suspected to be suffering from coronavirus were discharged from hospital on Monday after the throat swab sample test proved negative for the infection.

The throat swabs of three persons, who were admitted to a district government hospital in Udupi with symptoms of fever on Friday, were sent to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute for testing of coronavirus.

The trio had returned from China, 15 days ago.

The 30-year-old man from Kaup taluk had been to China on personal work and had returned to Udupi, 15 days ago. He had symptoms of fever, throat pain and cold and he was suggested to get admitted to hospital.

He was treated in the isolation ward.

A family from Mandarthi had gone on a tour to China and had returned 15 days ago. The father and son, who had complained of fever, were kept under observation at the isolation ward in the district government hospital.

New Delhi, Mar 21: The Indian Railways has cancelled all train services on Sunday in view of the Janata Curfew called by prime minister Narendra Modi. All mail and express trains will stop services from 4 am to 10 pm on Sunday while all suburban train services will be reduced to a bare minimum.

Around 1,300 long-distance, mail express services will also stand cancelled in light of the curfew to bat Covid-19. These long distance trains will remain cancelled between 4 am to 10 pm on Sunday.

All passenger trains originating between the midnight of Saturday-Sunday will not be run till 10 pm, Sunday, a railway ministry official said.

However, the passenger train services already on run at 7 am on the day will be allowed to run to the destinations, a railway ministry circular to zonal railways issued on Friday said.

The Indian Railways operates around 9,000 passenger trains and 3,500 mail express services each day.

“We have sent a directive to all zonal railways, and they will get back with the total number of train services affected, by Saturday afternoon,” an official ET spoke with, said.

In his address to the nation on Thursday, the Prime Minister called for a ‘janta curfew’ between 7 am to 9 pm on Sunday, in a social-distancing drive amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Passengers alighting at enroute stations from trains already on run, and desirous of staying at the station, may be accommodated in the waiting rooms at railway stations, without overcrowding them, the circular said.

The ministry has advised zonal railways to arrange for hassle-free refund to passengers affected because of cancelled trains, while regulating train services on Sunday.

Meanwhile, to contain the spread of Covid-19, all the food plazas, jan aahar stalls have been advised to be shut until further notice by IRCTC.

The on-board catering services in mail express trains are to be closed until further advice, while static units supplying meals to prepaid trains in operation, will continue to function.
