Mangaluru: Activists hail Siddaramaiah govt’s decision to amend KIADB Act

Mangaluru, Jun 27: Karavali Karnataka Janabhivriddhi Vedike and Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samiti have acknowledged and appreciated the chief minister Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government’s decision to amend the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board Act of 1966 and align it with the central land acquisitions Act of 2013.

Addressing a press conference in the city on Tuesday social activist Vidya Dinker, who had spearheaded a movement against KIDB’s ploy to acquire farmer's agricultural land for MRPLs extension using an old law, said that said that the Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, T B Jayachandra supported the farmer’s cause ever since the activists approached him in 2016 and finally it led to the government’s decision to amend what she termed as “draconian and outdated law”.

She said that since 2015 the farmers and activists have been exerting pressure on the government to implement the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013 (LARR Act 2013) and represented the case to all levels of the government several times.

She pointed out that KIADB was attempting to acquire more fertile agricultural land for MRPL’s proposed Phase IV expansion project at Permude and Kuthethur villages even though nearly 900-acres of land acquired for a different purpose at Thokur already had remained unused. According to her, MPRL can use the already acquired land for its expansion.

Ms Dinker, who had called on chief minister Siddaramiah at Vidhan Soudha along with other activists earlier this month, said that January 19 the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district was directed to submit a detailed report on alternate land and whether the MRPL truly needs fresh acquisitions.

She said that the High Court of Karnataka has ruled that the State government can no longer acquire land under the KIAD Act-1966 without confirming to the prerequisite of the LARR Act 2013. She added that Section 3(1) and Section 28 of the KIAD Act, which empowers the State government to declare any plot as industrial area and acquire land are repugnant to the provisions of LARR Act and that this has brought relief to the farmers and residents of Kuthethur and Permude.

Ms Dinker also said that the activist would continue their efforts to conserve fast diminishing crop lands in Mangaluru which leads to corresponding decline in water resources, air quality and green cover.

President of Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samithi Madhukar Amin, Secretary Lawrence D’Cunha, Bhoja and Hemalata Bhat were also present at the press meet.

Bengaluru, Jul 10: Alarmed by the surging COVID-19 cases across the state, especially in Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday urged the state capital’s residents not to visit their villages to prevent the infection’s spread.

“I urge the people of Bengaluru not to travel to their villages and prevent the infection from spreading in rural areas,” Yediurappa told reporters.

Admitting that the battle against the virus would be long, he said that the fight against COVID-19 could be won only through persistent efforts and with people’s cooperation with the frontline ‘warriors’.

“Combating the pandemic through preventive measures, providing treatment to the infected and saving lives are our priority,” he said.

With a record 2,228 positive cases on Thursday, the southern state’s COVID-19 tally shot up to 31,105, including 17,782 active cases, while 457 people have died of the infection till date, 17 just in the last 24 hours.

Of the new cases in the state, Bengaluru accounted for 1,373, taking its tally to 13,882, including 10,870 active, while 177 have succumbed to the virus since March 9.

No deaths were, however, reported in the city on Thursday.

Of the 457 patients in intensive care units (ICU) across the state, 292 are in Bengaluru hospitals.

Since unlock began on June 1, COVID-19 cases shot up to 15,242 on June 30 from 3,221 on May 31 and to 31,105 in 9 days since July 1.

Similarly, in Bengaluru, positive cases shot up to 4,555 on June 30 from 358 on May 31 and rose to 13,882 in 9 days since July 1.

The Chief Minister also appealed to all legislators of the ruling and opposition parties to give priority to contain the disease in their Assembly segments.

“Visit the COVID-19 designated hospitals and inspect if the required facilities are in place and bring any shortcomings to our notice,” the CM said

Bengaluru, Aug 1: The Karnataka government on Friday brought in Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Kamal Pant as the Bengaluru police Commissioner in a reshuffle of police personnel.

Pant comes in as the city police Commissioner in place of Bhaskar Rao.

According to a government order, Rao will handle internal security as ADGP, a post which was lying vacant due to the promotion of P S Sandhu.

Along with the two officials, ADGP B Dayananda who was in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and Economic Offences, has been made the new intelligence chief.

Bengaluru, Jun 24: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah criticised the current state government rates for COVID-19 treatment in private hospitals and said that the patients must be treated free of charge in all hospitals.

"The state government has fixed rates for treating COVID-19. The current rates are shocking to the people," Siddaramaiah said.
Questioning the state government, he said, "Where can people pay these rates fixed by the government per day? Looking at these rates can be heartbreaking for the people. This raises the question of whether the government is sensitive to people's issues."

"The government must promptly announce free treatment and set up a standard treatment protocol. The government should appoint a panel of experts to continuously monitor whether treatment is being properly administered and create an environment where the public is free from anxiety," Siddaramaiah added.

Karnataka on Tuesday reported 322 fresh COVID-19 positive cases and eight deaths.
According to the state health department, the total number of positive cases has mounted to 9,721 and 150 deaths. So far, 6,004 people have been discharged.
