Mangaluru, Jul 1: The state government on Saturday stayed its notification naming the road stretch between Ambedkar Circle and Catholic Club near Hampankatta in the city as 'Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road' hours after thousands of students of St Aloysius College took to the streets demanding that the stretch should be continued to called as St Aloysius College Road.

It may be recalled that a decision to rename the road was taken by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and it was approved by the government through a notification on May 24, 2017.

More than 10,000 students, staff members, former students, several organizations and well-wishers in a massive show of strength and solidarity have voiced their strong protest against the renaming of 'St Aloysius College Road'.

L Nagesh, Under Secretary to Urban Development Department, has issued an order staying the May 24, 2017 notification. The order reads, "The notification issued by the government on May 24, 2017 to name the road from Ambedkar Circle to Catholic Club via Light House Hill as 'Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road' has been stayed."

The notification naming the road was stayed considering the objections of Mangaluru City South MLA J R Lobo, who has brought to the notice of the government that the said road was known as 'St Aloysius College' for the past several years. The MLA has stated that the proposal to name the road as 'Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road' was not brought to the notice of St Aloysius College.

The MLA has pointed out that the head office of Vijaya Bank (Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty had joined the board of directors of the bank as chairman from 1962) was shifted to Bengaluru and the building where the bank was founded does not exist in the said road.

The MLA also has requested that the Vijaya Bank Employees Association has been planning to inaugurate the road on July 2 and hence the notification should be stayed to prevent disharmony, Nagesh stated in the order adding that status quo should be maintained till next order in this regard.
