Mangaluru, Feb 14: Ensure individual liberty during Valentine’s Day celebrations, the Mangaluru city and the Dakshina Kannada district police said no one would be allowed to take law into their own hands in the guise of opposing ‘western culture’ on Sunday.

vdayPolice has intensified patrolling in Mangaluru and other parts of the district in the wake of Bajrang Dal District Convener Bhujanga Kulal issuing a press release warning against celebration of Valentine’s Day.

City Police Commissioner Chandra Sekhar said the Mangaluru City Police will take stringent action against any one who tries to disrupt the law and order. Adequate security arrangements will be made at malls, beaches, parks and other public places on Sunday, he added.

The city police have also issued a notice to Bhujanga Kulal to explain about the “Threat to the district administration” in the press release issued by him. In a press release, he had said the Bajrang Dal opposes observing February 14 as Valentine’s Day.

“The district administration should not give permission for any events to mark Valentine’s Day,” Kulal had stated in the release. Going a step further, he had also warned against any celebration in the city and cautioned that the district administration will be responsible for any untoward incidents that may occur in the district.

However, later in the evening, Bhujanga Kulal, gave a written statement to the police that outfit will not create any untoward incidents during Valentine’s Day and will cooperate with law and order. His written statementcame after the Mangaluru Police asked for a clarification regarding a press release issued two days ago, said Mangaluru city police commissioner.

1. Who celebrate this day in the name of Love, are real fools. The real love is not confined to any definite day or date.

2. Why only on this day the Bhajrangis are concerned. Everyday the worst is happening. Our own Kannada film industry is also showing the worst sex promoting acts. Why these Bhajis can not at least talk on these films. There is no single film without so called licensed Hero heroins of sex promoters.

3. Even these Bhajis also go and watch such films. Many a time they buy ticket at black market.
It means there are licensed white colored sex promotions and poor people for another standard.

We are not supporting such acts, our question is why this double standard.

Police department is in right direction by getting the written statement (Muchchalige patra) by Bajarangi Kulal. This is the first time Police in action regarding law & order situation in Mangalore after SP Murugan transferred. However, I don't endorse valentine day, and it is upto the individuals.

Bengaluru, Apr 21: Alarmed by reports that 53 media persons have contracted coronavirus in Maharashtra, a Minister on Tuesday urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to screen all the journalists in Karnataka.

During the regular Covid-19 related briefing on Monday, a reporter had raised the issue of 53 journalists in the neighbouring state testing positive for the disease, with Minister for Primary and Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar.

In Maharashtra, out of the 171 scribes examined medically, 53 were found to have the viral infection.

In his letter to the CM, Kumar said a similar test should be carried on the journalists in Karnataka.

"The journalists wanted a similar kind of screening to be carried out on them. Therefore, please direct the health and the information department immediately to conduct the screening of journalists who are in contact with public," Kumar said.

Bengaluru, June 5: Under the leadership of trouble-shooter D K Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress is planning a political ‘ghar wapsi’ to bring back leaders who quit the party and also rope in those from other parties.

Shivakumar, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, has constituted a 12-member committee headed by former minister Allum Veerabhadrappa to liaise to anchor this effort to bring back people into the party fold.

The committee comprises of former legislators B A Hasanabba, Ajaykumar Sarnaik, Abhaychandra Jain, Satish Sail, Prafulla Madhukar, former MPs R Dhruvanarayan and BN Chandrappa, MLA V Muniyappa, former mayor Sampath Raj, Mahila Congress leader Kripa Alva and former KPCC general secretary V Y Ghorpade.

This move comes more than a year after over a dozen Congress MLAs defected and joined the BJP, leading to the collapse of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government. Also, several influential leaders quit the party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections last year.

The constitution of this committee also coincides with disgruntlement brewing within the ruling BJP.

“Many people who left the party and others have applied (to join Congress). Many have met me also. I felt it wouldn't be right for me to make a decision. So, this committee has been constituted,” Shivakumar said. “They will process all applications and send it to the KPCC.”

According to Shivakumar, any person wanting to join the Congress should accept the party’s leadership and its ideology. “Importantly, they should be first accepted by the cadre. If there's no acceptance from the cadre, then what's the point?” he said.
