Mangaluru: Another held for stripping, robbing, blackmailing college student

Mangaluru, Mar 6: Almost three weeks after a diploma student in the city was stripped, beaten and robbed by a group of four miscreants, the police have managed to arrest the main accused.battery

A team of Mangaluru CCB police led by inspector Valentine D'Souza nabbed Jayaprakash (24) alias JP a resident of Boloor, Mangaluru from Shirahallai village near Shikaripura in Shivamogga district on Saturday.

Akshay, a 19-year-old student from Neerumarga was kidnapped by four friends in an auto-rickshaw and taken to Sultan Battery on February 14, the Valentine's Day.

The boy was forced to remove his clothes off and stand in his undergarments. One among the accused then hit him with a cane. The accused, who are four in number, left the place after robbing the student of his cash.

These four miscreants also made a video of the student in his undergarments and threatened him that they would release the video on the social media if he approached the police.

The very next day, the boy and his parents approached the Urwa police and lodged a complaint as the accused released the video on the social media. The complaint later was referred to the Mangaluru Rural Police.

A week after the incident police managed to arrest two accused identified as Joel and Vikky Bappal. The police are on the look-out for the fourth accused identified as Loy.

Bengaluru, May 20: An owner of a hair cutting training salon in the city has given shelter to the jobless IT professionals and migrant workers hailing from north-eastern states and Nepal, in his salon.

Rahul Rai, the owner said, "The moment the lockdown started then I received many complaints from different corners that several persons became jobless and they were thrown out of their rented accommodations."

"They are from different states of the North-east and some of them are from Nepal also. I converted my hair-cutting training salon into a shelter home for them," he added.

A person who got shelter at the salon said, "I lost my job after the lockdown started. I was facing a lot of issues after my landlord had evicted me from my rented accommodation. I spent about a week nearby a lake. I managed to contact Rahul Rai through Facebook and he rescued me along with many others."

Bengaluru, Mar 6: At least 13 persons, including women and children, were killed and five critically wounded when an SUV collided with a car that had crashed against a road divider moments ago near Kunigal in Tumakuru district of Karnataka in the early hours of Friday, police said.

Of the victims, while 12 died on the spot, a child breathed his last in a hospital, they added.

The injured were admitted to the hospital, the police said.

Among the dead, 10 were from Tamil Nadu and three from Bengaluru. All of them were pilgrims who were on their way to Dharmasthala in Karnataka.

There were five women and two children among the dead, the police said.

"Thirteen persons have died. The incident occurred post midnight. A car crashed against the road divider and another car collided with it," Tumakuru Superintendent of Police (SP) K Vamsi Krishna said.

The police had to struggle to pull the bodies out from the mangled vehicles.

On learning about the incident, relatives of the victims rushed to the spot.

Mangaluru, Apr 7: The virology lab set up in Wenlock Hospital here to test COVID-19 samples will start functioning from Tuesday, Karnataka District in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said.

In his tweeter Mr Poojary said “After receiving approval from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Virology (NIV), the Virology Research and Diagnostic Laboratory set up at district Wenlock will start operating from April 7. The samples for COVID-19 will be tested in the district itself. I thank the state government for helping us set up the lab.”

The new Lab becomes the 10th government lab for testing COVID-19 samples in the state.
