Mangaluru: CM announces Rs 10 lakh solatium to police firing victims

Mangaluru, Dec 22: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next kin of the two deceased, who were killed in the police firing in Mangaluru recently.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, the Chief Minister said he had directed the Deputy Commissioner Dakshina Kannada district to pay the compensation to the next kin of the deceased.

Replying to questions on ordering for a probe into the firing incident, he said, "A suitable decision will be taken shortly."

During Citizenship Amendment Act protests, two persons, both were belonging to minority community, were killed in a firing incident by the police in the Coastal town on December 19, when the protestors allegedly tried to storm into a police station.

JD(S) leader and former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy had visited the members of the deceased family and handed over a cheque of Rs five lakh to the victims family members on Sunday.

Karnataka govt to build guest house for Kannadiga pilgrims in Ayodhya

Bengaluru, Aug 8: Anticipating a huge number of pilgrims from Karnataka to start visiting Ayodhya following the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Ram temple, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Friday requested his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath for two acres of land to build a 'yatri nivas' (guest house).

"A large number of pilgrims from Karnataka would be visiting Ayodhya. The government of Karnataka wishes to construct a yatri nivas for the pilgrims visiting Ayodhya," Yediyurappa wrote to Yogi.

"I request you to grant two acres of land in Ayodhya for this purpose," he said.

The Chief Minister said the yatri nivas will be constructed for the benefit of pilgrims from the southern state.

He also congratulated the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for successfully laying the foundation stone for the Ram temple on Wednesday.

Ex-minister Vishwanath among 5 nominated to Karnataka Legislative Council

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala, had appointed five persons to the Karnataka Legislative Council, which remained vacant, including former ministers H Vishwanath and C P Yogeshwar, here on Wednesday.

In a Raj Bhavan communique issued here on Wednesday, it was stated that the Governor had accepted the names suggested by the Chief minister B S Yediyurappa, to fill the vacancies in the Upper House.

Apart from H Vishwanath, and Yogeshwar, the others who were nominated to the Council, were former MLA Bharathi Shetty, Shantharama Budna Siddi, and Talwar Sabanna.

Magisterial enquiry into Mangaluru police firing postponed amid corona scare

Mangaluru, Mar 23: The magisterial enquiry into the police firing during the anti-CAA protest on December 19 in Mangaluru, has been postponed following the lockdown of Dakshina Kannada district, Udupi DC G Jagadeesh announced on Monday.

The inquiry by Udupi DC G Jagadeesh was scheduled on Monday. Already, City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha and others have deposed before the magistrate. The Deputy Commissioner and the Assistant Commissioner were supposed to appear before the magistrate.

Following the December 19 violence and the death of Nausheen and Jaleel due to alleged police firing, the state government had commissioned two probes-- one magisterial and the other, a CID inquiry.

As per the government order, a report on the inquiry was to be submitted before March 23. On the request by the magistrate for more time since the documents and videos had to be examined, the government had asked him to submit the report by April 23.
