Mangaluru: College student among 6 held for Christmas day murder

Mangaluru, Dec 28: The Mangaluru South Police have arrested six youths in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Melrick Antony D’Souza in Valencia on December 25.

The police gave the names of the arrested persons as Nishak Poojary (28), Vinesh Kumar (30), Sachin Shetty (22), Ganesh Kulal (34), Praveen Poojary (42) and Sandeep Shetty (33).

The police said that the arrested persons were said to be associates of Sandeep Shetty. One among the arrested is a college student.

The police said that D’Souza, an associate of murder accused Mankey Stand Vijay, was allegedly involved in a case of attempt to kill Sandeep Shetty in May 2016. The murder of D’Souza was in retaliation to the May 2016 attack, they added.

The police said that the arrested persons attacked D’Souza just as he returned home after attending a Christmas party.

The attack came just two days after D’Souza was released from the Mangaluru District Prison.

The police said that one of the accused, Praveen Poojary, was involved in the murder of Devadas in Jeppinamogaru.

He was also an accused in a case of attempt to murder Raja near Bhagwan Mahaveer Junction. Sandeep Shetty is an accused in two cases of assault.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Action will be taken against private hospitals that were violating government norms and charging exorbitant fees charges for the treatment of Covid-19 patients and suspects, said Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi.

The government has taken action against private hospitals in Bengaluru and the same parameters would be adopted other cities, he said speaking to media persons in Belagavi on Friday.

Jarkiholi said that the government had noticed that patients were levied exorbitant charges for Covid-19 treatment. People too have complaints regarding the huge bills by these private hospitals and have demanded action.

“We are not under the obligation of any private hospital and stringent action will be taken against all erring and violating government tariffs. They will have to treat patients and follow the tariffs fixed,” he stated.

Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences District Hospital had been directed to install CCTV cameras in Covid-19 wards and install monitors at reception to facilitate monitoring of treatment and condition of the wards. BIMS management was taken to task for not following the directive and have been given a deadline to install CCTV cameras, Jarkiholi informed.

Mangaluru, May 5: Even as the coastal city entered third phase of lockdown to contain the spread of covid-19, a wild bison was spotted in Mangaluru today. 

According to sources, local residents at Hathill area and Mannagudda area spotted bison. It is not sure whether it was the same bison or two different bison.

Some reports claimed that it was spotted in Kudroli area too triggering panic among people. 

With the help of local residents and police, the forest officials managed to catch the bison around noon. 

It is assumed that the wild animal must have come to the city as there was less movement of people and vehicle due to lockdown for past few weeks.

Bengaluru, Apr 4: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has appealed to employers not to cut salaries of their maids, servants and drivers who are unable to attend work due to the current lockdown situation in the country.

He said compassionate gesture of employers will support the poor and needy.

"I request all the employers not to cut salaries of their maids, servants, drivers etc., who are not able to work due to social distancing. Your compassionate gesture will support the poor and needy to overcome this hard time. FightBackKarnataka CoronavirusPandemic," the Chief Minister said in a tweet.
