Mangaluru: College students get a taste of paddy farming

Mangaluru, Jul 14: Rice is the most important food crop of India covering about one-fourth of the total cropped area and providing food to about half of the Indian population. To create awareness of cultivation of paddy National Service Scheme (NSS) of Milagres College organised paddy farming programme recently at Neermarga.

The paddy program was inaugurated symbolically by planting paddy in the field by the dignitaries such as Mr Victor A Pereira, Agriculturist, Neermarga, Mr Chethan Kumar Natillu, Member, Neermarga Gramapanchayath, Rev Fr Michael Santhumayor, Principal, NSS Program Officer Mr Denzil E Pinto and NSS Assistant Program Officer Ms Princita J DSouza and NSS Volunteers were present on the occasion

Addressing the students Mr Victor A Pereira congratulated the students for taking part in agricultural activities. Later he also explained about paddy cultivation and the need of educating students about the importance of agriculture and rain as source of cultivation. Mr Chetan Kumar Natillu, another dignitary said that every citizen should appreciate the hard work of every farmer and by minimize wastage of food.  Rev Fr Michael Santhumayor, Principal requested students to participate in socially productive activities. This was followed by planting paddy in the field by Guests, Principal and NSS Volunteers.

30 NSS Volunteers actively participated in the programme. They had hands on experience in planting paddy and also they developed the traditional cultivation skills. Mr Joel Pereira, Lecturer Milagres College hosted the program.

Hubballi, Jan 11: Karnataka Industries Minister Jagadeesh Shatter's mother Basvennamma Shivappa Shetter passed away here on Friday evening.

She was 86. She is survived by three sons and a daughter.

The final rituals was held on Saturday, family sources said.

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 28: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Public Works Govind Karjol on Tuesday said that he is ready to quit if the post asks him to do so to pave way for smooth expansion of the Cabinet.

Responding to a question from media persons on the issue here, he said he was ready to quit his post any time.

“If the party asks me to resign now, I will send back my official car and return by bus”, he added.

Further, he opined that there should not be efforts to seek a berth in the Cabinet based on caste.

“Putting pressure on the party based on caste is not right. The party will consider those who worked for the party and also take district-wise representation into account while filling up the vacancies”, he added.

Bengaluru, Mar 28: A case has been registered against an Infosys employee in Bengaluru for a shocking social media post urging people to "go out and sneeze" and spread the highly contagious COVID-19 virus that has infected over 800 people across the country and claimed 19 lives.

"Let's join hands, go out and sneeze with open mouth in public. Spread the virus," the man wrote on Facebook.
"A case has been registered against the person. Further investigation on. Looking forward to get adequate support from your end during investigation," Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Bengaluru city tweeted by tagging along a tweet by Infosys.
Taking congnisance of the post by its employee, the Infosys said the post was "against the code of conduct and its commitment to responsible social sharing".
"Infosys has completed its investigation on the social media post by one of its employees and we believe that this is not a case of mistaken identity," the company said in a statement on Twitter.
"The social media post by the employee is against Infosys' code of conduct and its commitment to responsible social sharing. Infosys has a zero tolerance policy towards such acts and has accordingly, terminated the services of the employee," the statement added.

Earlier this month, the IT firm had vacated one of its buildings in Bengaluru after an employee was suspected to be infected.
