Mangaluru: Cops arrest 11 for plotting to kidnap, rob jewellery shop owner

Mangaluru, Nov 11: The Mangaluru City police have arrested 11 people including five who are alleged to be inter-state dacoits, who allegedly conspired to rob a city-based jewellery shop owner.

They have seized two cars, weapons, mobile phones and other items valued at Rs 3.66 lakh from the accused.

The arrested have been identified as Sheikh Mohammed Ansar, 34; Rameez, 21; Mohammed Tausif, 24; Mohammed Thausif, 25; Ubedulla, 25 and Mohammed Ali, 25. The interstate dacoits are: Mohammed Kabir, 30; Asgar Ali, 27; Sabith,19; Mohammed Sabad, 22 and Amir Ali, 19.

All the arrested have criminal histories with cases registered in Kerala and Karnataka, ranging from murder, attempt to murder, assault and under Pocso.

According to police, the arrested accused were planning to kidnap Santosh who is the owner of Vaishnavi Jewellers on Car Street, and rob him of Rs 2 crore last month.

Police said the suspects were arrested near Pachhandy, after receiving a tip-off. Police have also seized duplicate vehicle number plates from their cars.

The police said they are on the lookout for four more persons allegedly involved in the conspiracy. A case has been registered at the Urwa police station.

Mangaluru, Jul 2: Mangaluru BJP Corporator Manohar Shetty, who entered a manhole to clean a drain, said that he did it to avoid waterlogging ahead of monsoon as people were facing several problems for the past few years.

"In my ward, there is a rainwater drain at Kadri Kambla junction and for the past few years, there was a waterlogging problem due to trash water used to collect and vehicles used to find it difficult to pass in that area," Shetty said.

"Since there was a lot of trash it had to be cleared to avoid waterlogging. We changed our dresses, and then I along with my three party workers entered manhole and cleared the trash," he said.

The Mangaluru BJP Corporator further said that it was not a publicity stunt, and he cleaned the drain to solve the problem of people. "During elections, I had promised people to get the drain cleaned. Since monsoon was coming; something had to be done; we did not do it for publicity but to solve a problem," he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: District administration in Kalaburagi, where the first death in India due to COVID-19 was reported, has identified over 25 people, who come close to the deceased and quarantined for observation, Minister for Health B Sreeramulu said on Friday.

In reply to a debate on the issue during Zero Hour of the Legislative Assembly, the Health Minister said that two members of the victim’s family and 23 others are suspected of COVID-19.

Mr. Sreeramulu said all the schools of the district have been as a preventive measure to contain the deadly virus.

Udupi, Apr 29: Udupi Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha on Wednesday said that though the district was in the green zone in connection with COVID-19, there would not be any further relaxations and the lockdown would continue till May 3.

According to a statement, he said that no fresh Covid-19 cases have been reported for the past month. However, the district is not immune to the threat of the infection. Thus, the lockdown would continue till May 3 with minimum relaxation.

The district has already initiated relaxations and mandatory guidelines have to be implemented, he further said.
