Mangaluru, Aug 6: Karnataka State Minorities Commission has urged the Mangaluru city and Dakshina Kannada district police to check communal flare ups being triggered through social media.
"People are more active in social media and some news leads to flare ups. I told police officials to have some people to keep watching on this kind of social media messages. Actions should be taken immediately to stop such activities," said Naseer Ahmed, Chairman, and Karnataka State Minorities Commission.
As a Commission can give direction, inquire and investigate matters related to minorities, said Naseer, who held an official review meeting at the deputy commissioner's office.
"Commission has judicial power to summon any officer, investigate and inquire. I have directed to the police to find ways to bring communal harmony and instil confidence among people. Law and order machinery is for everybody. Preventive measures should be taken instantly when they get information on any tension. Police should go to the spot and prevent untoward incidents and should not allow social media flare ups," Naseer said and added that police should be more proactive towards communal tension.
"They are doing their job, but should come up with new kind methods as miscreants are also using technology to commit crime. Booking cases under CrPC 107, 108, 109 and making them execute bonds are old methods. Let them follow those steps, but they also explore modern methods too. Further, police should take action irrespective of political affiliations of the accused," Naseer said.
