Mangaluru does it again: Green Corridor created for organ transport

Mangaluru, Feb 25: For the second time in a year Mangaluru city traffic police on Thursday created a "green corridor" to facilitate unhindered transport of a brain dead donor's vital organ from a private hospital here to the Mangaluru International airport.

The harvested organs belonged to Vinith Raj, son of Krishna and Geetha Moolya, from Manjeshwar in Kasaragod district. The 19-year-old electrician was declared brain dead after he fell off a building following an electric shock recently.

When Vinith Raj's parents conveyed their wish to donate his organs to the doctors at AJ Hospital, they made necessary arrangements. A team of surgeons from Bengaluru arrived on Wednesday night to assist the local doctors.

Though the surgeons from two hospitals successfully harvested kidney, heart valves, liver and cornea, only liver was taken to Bengaluru through Mangaluru Airport, sources said.

It is learnt that the transport took around 12 minutes, a distance of 11 kms, with nearly three dozen personnel overseeing that the ever-busy road remained clear of all vehicles.

It could be recalled here that Mangaluru police had created Green Corridor for the first time in April 2015 to transport the organ of Jeevan Vijay Fernandes, 24-year-old accident victim from Bellur in Bantwal taluk.

Oh, my heart breaks for the family. My family also had to make the decision to donate my niece's organs. For me personally it was one of the most healing things knowing she had saved so many lives but I do often wonder how/where these people are.

As a recipient of a heart just over two years ago I am eternally grateful for those who make this decision. I can continue to be a son, a husband, and a father to two small children.

My brother passed unexpectedly on 24th February 2015, he too donated his organs. His selfless act has helped us, as a family to know he breaths through another & has assisted at least four other recipients & their families last year. We would love to reach out to the recipients on his 1yr memorial but understand the sensitivity for some and respect their privacy but it's hard.... I know it would mean the world to mum & dad to meet them & would greatly assist in their healing. I wish there was a 'tick box' option to opt in for communication between families.

Bengaluru, April 6: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday said he is following the one-time fasting as per the order by BJP President JP Nadda.

"I am following the one-time fasting as per the order by our national President JP Nadda, on BJP foundation day today, as a mark of respect to doctors, nurses, media personnel," said BS Yediyurappa.

In his message to BJP workers earlier today, Nadda stated, "All BJP Karyakartas to give up one meal on our Foundation Day as a way to show solidarity with people facing hardships during the lockdown. Provide food packets to 5+1 needy under #FeedtheNeedy program. In the next one week, put a system in place where we can provide two homemade face covers to each person at our booth. We should circulate videos of preparation and distribution of such face covers with #WearFaceCoverStaySafe."

Mandya, Jun 13: Degree colleges will begin classes after the lockdown is lifted and dates for examinations will be announced later, said deputy chief minister CR Ashwath Narayan on Friday.

Speaking at College of Agriculture, Mandya (VC Farm) on Friday, Ashwath Narayan said the lockdown will be completely phased out on June 30 and degree colleges will begin classes after that. “We will speak with all stakeholders to chalk out measures as to how to reopen degree colleges amidst coronavirus scare. All students must continue their studies and be prepared for exams,” he said.

Narayan said the cabinet has approved to upgrade VC Farm as a university and an ordinance will soon be promulgated in this regard. “There is a need to change the present curriculum to meet present day requirements. VC Farm will be made into a world class agriculture university and a vice chancellor will be appointed,” he said.

“Apart from traditional education, we must concentrate on skill-based education as it should create more job opportunities. We are committed to establish more skill-based educational institutes in Mandya district,” Narayan said.

Later Narayan visited Shivaragudda near Maddur and inspected 48 acres of government land which could be used for establishing skill-based education institutions. “This land was earlier used for imparting skill-based education in a collaboration with Denmark. Sir M Visvesvaraya had established skill-based institutions here in 1923 and now they have become defunct. The then prime minister of Denmark had inaugurated this century old institution. We will revive it and this will help local youths,” he said.

‘Ticket promised only to R Shankar’

When asked, Narayan said R Shankar, who quit the Congress-JD(S) coalition and joined BJP will be given a party ticket to contest the legislative council election. “Except Shankar, the high command did not promise council tickets to those who quit congress and JD(S) and joined our party. It is true that there is hectic lobbying in BJP to get tickets,” he said.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: Three legislators of the opposition Congress in Karnataka, including 2 MLAs and 1 MLC tested positive for coronavirus and are under treatment, a party official said on Saturday.

"Our Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalgi in Belagavi district and Humnabad MLA Rajashekhar Patil and his MLC brother Chandrashekhar Patil in Bidar district tested positive for the infection and are under treatment at designated hospitals," party spokesman Ravi Gowda told media persons in Bangaluru.

Koujalgi's swab sample was taken on Friday after he showed signs of illness and its result turned positive earlier in the day.

"As Koujalgi attended a review meeting at Bailhongal, about 20 officials who participated in the meeting have been home quarantined," said Gowda.

Koujalgi is the second lawmaker in the state's northwest region to test positive after BJP's Belagavi North assembly segment MLA Anik Benake tested positive for the virus on July 15.

"Patil brothers were in self quarantine after meeting BJP's Bidar Lok Sabha member Bhagwanth Khuba, who tested positive on Wednesday. Their tests also showed they were infected with the virus," Gowda said.

Congress MLC Sandesh Nagaraj, who tested positive on Friday, is under treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru.

Dakshina Kannada district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai is in institutional quarantine in Bengaluru after he tested positive for the infection.
