Mangaluru: Dongerkery ‘Appu Bhat’ no more

Mangalore, Oct 3: Vedamurthy Dongerkery Ramachandra Janaradhan Bhat (77) (popularly called ‘Appa Bhat’) passed away on Wednesday, October 2 at 10.30 p.m. following heart attack. He was a resident of Dongerkery. He was a well known Pradhana Arachaka of Shree Ganapathi Matt, Dongerkery and was famous as a practitioner of traditional astrology using cowrie shells.

He had undergone surgery at a private hospital sometime back for removal of gallstones and had been ill for some time. He is survived by his wife Anuradha, one brother Vasanth Bhat and two sisters. His one brother and a sister had predeceased him.

He was born on 25.5.1943 and has been serving as a priest for almost 60 years. He practiced traditional cowrie shell astrology (Balme), which was a hereditary practice in his family, for the last 43 years and he was known as ‘Balme Bhat’.

He was a member of the management committee of Srinivas Patashala, VT Road. He has also served as Pradhana Arachaka of Sri Venkatramana Teemple, Car Street. He performed the pratistapana of granite Ganapathi idol (Sheela Ganapathi) at Mahamayee Temple, Car Street.

His father Vedamurthy Janaradhan Bhat had opened the doors of his family shrine Shree Ganapathi Matt, Dongerkery to the public with wide ranging spiritual activities. Shree Ganapathi Matt, Dongerkery is known for its annual Ganesh Chathurthi Festival when large crowds throng to offer worship. The 10-day event, which is approaching his 50th year, is also one of the longest periods of observing Ganeshotsava festival in entire Karnataka and perhaps India.

This festival is popular for the delicious daily lunch provided to the visiting devotees and also for the ‘Ranga Pooja’ prayers offered to the deity every night. Vedamurthy Ramachandra Bhat continued this tradition and took it greater heights. His personal popularity with the devotees, especially the youth, was very great.

His funeral was performed on Thursday afternoon after 5.00 pm at Boloor crematorium.

Mangaluru, July 18: A man and his son have been arrested for torturing an elderly woman in Savanalu under Belthangady police station limits in Dakshina Kannada. 

The arrest came after a video clip of the duo beating the woman went viral on social media.

According to police, the duo has been identified as the woman’s son Srinivas Shetty and her grandson Pradeep Shetty.

The accused had allegedly been torturing the 70-year-old ailing woman and the video of the same has gone viral on social media.

The police have booked a suo moto case under Indian Penal Code 323, 504 and section 24 of Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

Mangaluru, Jul 10: Among over a hundred special flights to be operated between India and United Arab Emirates under the fourth phase of Vande Bharat Mission, five flights will be operated from Mangaluru International Airport.

The repatriation flights are also allowed to carry eligible passengers from India to UAE between July 12 and July 26.

These flights will be allowed to carry the ICA approved UAE residents on their onward journey from India to the Gulf country.

According to Air India, while flying from India to UAE, these special flights will carry only those passengers who are destined for the UAE.

Flights from Mangaluru

From Mangaluru, the first special flight will take off on July 13 at 7.30 am and reach Sharjah at 9.30 am.

The second flight is scheduled to take off on July 16 at 9.30 am and reach Dubai airport at 11.20 am.

The third flight will take off on July 19 at 11.00 am and land at Sharjah airport at 1.00 pm.

The fourth flight will take off on July 20 at 7.30 am and reach Sharjah at 9.30 am.

The fifth flight will take off on July 26 at 8.00 am and land at Abu Dhabi Airport at 10.20 am.

Udupi, May 4: Udupi Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha said that mechanised boat fishing will be permitted in Udupi district in another two days.

He further said that the decision was taken after the district was declared as a Green Zone as no fresh cases of COVID-19 were reported from the district in the past several days.

The Deputy Commissioner told the media here that fishing will be permitted but social distancing has to be practised and only 30 boats will be permitted in a day.
