Mangaluru Feb 17: Acting swiftly on a specific intelligence, the sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Thursday detained a Dubai bound passenger at Mangaluru International Airport and recovered foreign currency from him.
The accused has been identified as Sirajuddin Pallikke Kunhali (39) hailing from Kasaragod and presently residing in Mangaluru.
He was carrying foreign currencies equivalent to Rs 25.82 lakh. The officials seized them under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962 read with FEMA Rules and RBI guidelines issued in this regard.
Vinayak Bhat, deputy director, DRI Mangaluru zone said Sirajuddin was nabbed while he was about to board Air India Express flight IX 813 for Dubai after having completed all check-in and immigration formalities. When sleuths frisked him, they found he had concealed some foreign currency notes inside his socks. On thorough examination of his baggage, they found foreign currencies concealed inside the hollow tubular parts of handles.
The currency was in rolled bundles of the handles and some more currency notes were spread under the false bottom of the said bag. The foreign currency seized include US Dollars, Swiss Franc, Euros and Kuwait Dinars, Vinayak said that during interrogation, Sirajuddin admitted the offence and said he indulged in this act for making some easy money. He was arrested and produced before principal civil judge (senior division) and CJM.
The directorate is hopeful of getting new breakthrough regarding unauthorized currency dealers and hawala operators in the course of further investigation, the officer added.
