‘Mangaluru firing victims named in FIR to protect killer cops’

Mangaluru, Dec 23: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has urged the Karnataka state government to clarify who ordered police firing on December 19 in Mangaluru that claimed lives of two innocent men and injured many.

Addressing a press meet, committee president K.S. Mohammed Masood condemned the police firing and also registering a case against firing victims. Registration of the case against the two was an attempt to protect the Police Department and the government. The government should take action against the erring police officials, he said.

He said government should order a judicial inquiry into the police firing during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 in the city which claimed two lives on Thursday.

He said that Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, during his visit to the city on Saturday, mentioned that an inquiry will be conducted into the whole incident. But he has not specified the nature of the inquiry.

He said that the government should provide government jobs to the family members of those who died in the firing and bear the education expenses of the two children of Jaleel who died in the police firing.

The government should also bear the expenses for the medical treatment of the injured who are admitted in different hospitals, he said

Masood said that the police should stop treating civil society members as enemies. The committee also condemned the lathi-charge. Innocents have been beaten up, he said.

He said that in view of Thursday’s incidents and the subsequent developments, the committee has postponed its protest against the CAA planned at Nehru Maidan here on December 28. Now, the protest will be held on January 4. The committee will approach the police for permission. If police deny permission, the committee will later decide on its future course of action.

Mr. Masood said that there is no clarity in the CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

He said that the committee is appealing to all those who are protesting against the CAA to do it peacefully. The committee will extend all cooperation in maintaining peace in society.

Mysuru, Jan 11: Accusing the Congress and other opposition parties of pursuing “vote bank politics” on the Citizenship (Amendment ) Act (CAA), Kannada littérateur and Saraswathi Samman awardee S L Byrappa accused the party of misleading the people on the issue.

Speaking to media persons here on Friday, Mr Bhyrappa said that Congress was adopting the divide and rule policy of the British, who had created a rift between the Hindus and the Muslims to break their unity during the freedom struggle.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: With preparations underway for conducting exams for the final semester/ year students in the state, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwathnarayan on Monday directed the respective universities to conduct exams for the backlog papers as well.

"In the wake of COVID-19, it has been decided to hold exams only for the students of final semester/year courses. It has come to our notice that some universities have decided against conducting exams for final year students who have a backlog to clear from previous semesters. This is unpardonable," the Deputy Chief Minister said.

"Our intention is to see that the final year students finish their course. In the present situation, conducting only final semester exams won't help. We have to help the students in clearing their backlogs," added Ashwathnarayan, directing all universities to compulsorily conduct these exams.

Meanwhile, Ashwathnarayan thanked the staff and officials of various government departments who were responsible for successfully conducting the CET exams even amidst the difficult situation in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

"In all, 1,94,419 students had registered for the CET exams, of which 1,75,428 wrote the exams. The percentage of students who took up the exams this year was equivalent to that of the previous years, in normal times," the DCM informed.

"After we successfully conducted the exams, Arunachal Pradesh is going to conduct the Public Service Commission exams on the lines of how we successfully conducted the exams. Likewise, even our KPSC has said it will conduct the exams. We must appreciate the good work of the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), which has set an example for others," Ashwathnarayan said.

The deputy chief minister said that 33 colleges in various districts across the state faced shortage of land and that it is the responsibility of the District Commissioners (DCs) to get the lands sanctioned for all these colleges.
In Bagalkot district alone land has not been sanctioned for six degree colleges, he said.

Reacting to this, Bagalkot DC Captain Rajendra assured to look into the matter as soon as he receives the proposal from department officials.

"Similarly, there is shortage of land for five Diploma colleges and 28 ITI colleges in different parts of the state. The DCs must immediately pay attention to this. Once they get the land, buildings will come up within no time," the Karnataka deputy chief minister said.

Bengaluru, Mar 26: Karnataka government has warned strict penal action against landlords or house-owners under provisions of law for forcing doctors, paramedical staff and healthcare professionals to vacate their rented residences citing COVID-19 spread through them as the reason.

Stating that lot of complaints have been received in this regard, an order issued by Additional Chief Secretary Health and Family Welfare department Jawaid Akhtar said such behaviour amounted to obstructing public servant in discharging their duties./

Noting that the state government has issued Karnataka Epidemic Diseases (COVID-19) regulations 2020 for prevention and containment of the virus, it directed Deputy Commissioners of the district, Commissioner and Joint Commissioner of BBMP (civic body in Bengaluru), Commissioners of Municipal Corporations and District Deputy Commissioner of Police to take action against such incidents.

"Strict penal action should be taken against such landlords or house-owners under relevant provisions of law and submit an action taken report on a daily basis to the office of Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department," the order read.
