Mangaluru gets more rain than last year so far, but less than average

Mangaluru, Jun 27: Even though Mangaluru taluk recorded less than average rain fall this year, it has already breached the last year's monsoon rainfall figures.

However, the meteorological department's prediction of above normal' monsoon has not yet reflected in Mangaluru and other parts of the coastal district.

Last year by June 27 Mangaluru taluk received 770 mm of rain, this year it has been 1032.3 mm so far. The average rainfall for the period is 1248 mm.

The other four districts of Dakshina Kannada received rain less than last year. As a result the overall rainfall in the district so far this year is also less compared to last year.

Till today the district received 843 mm rain this year, last year it was 100.6 mm. The normal rainfall figures for the district during this period are 1,176.2 mm.

Mangaluru, May 13: Kannadigas in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have sought additional flights to return to Karnataka during a video conference with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa here on Tuesday.

Noting that most of the ex-pats in UAE were from the coastal region, they urged the state government to ensure that most of these flights land in the Mangalore International Airport.

Many Kannadigas in the UAE were left unemployed due to the lockdown. “Many of them do not have the means to return to Karnataka and the state government should aid them,” representatives of various Kannadiga ex-pat groups urged the CM.

Yediyurappa said that the government has made all arrangements to bring back the ex-pats, and assured to fulfil all their demands.

Mangaluru, Jul 8: A corporator and a staff in Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) have tested positive for the coronavirus. 

The woman corporator, who was under home quarantine for past few days ago, received her covid test report today. 

A staff of health department who works in MCC also tested positive for the covid-19. 

The woman corporator had recently attended a primary health centre meeting. A person who had attended the meeting was later tested positive. Hence the corporator was placed under home quarantine.

Madikeri, Feb 23: Back-to-back floods and landslides in the last two years, has led to a fall in the number of tourists coming to the coffee-growing region of Kodagu, forcing the district administration to intervene and take confidence-building measures, telling tourists that Kodagu was safe to visit.

According to the statistics of the Karnataka State Tourism Department, Kodagu recorded a moderately good number of tourists in 2018 and 2019, the years that the district witnessed devastating floods and landslides.

The Department’s statistics reveal that 17 lakh tourists visited Kodagu in 2018 and 18 lakh in 2019. This means the flood-ravaged years did attract tourists contrary to what the stakeholders had claimed.
