Mangaluru, Jan 30: For the first time a consolation meet of Gulf returnees, especially those who lost their jobs in Saudi Arabia in the wake of Nitaqat or Saudization drive was held in Mangaluru under the aegis of the Karnataka unit of the Gulf-based India Social Forum.

Dozens of Gulf returnees from across coastal Karnataka had taken part in the meet held at Jamiyyatul Falah auditorium on Tuesday and poured their woes.

Among the top demands raised at the meet were immediate establishment of a help desk at Deputy Commissioner’s office in Mangaluru for the Gulf returnees as promised by the district in-charge minister U T Khader months ago and implementation of the promised scheme by the state governments to help the Gulf returnees to begin a new career in their homeland.

Speaking on the occasion, Abdul Majeed Aladka, a member of ISF, said that non-resident Kannadigas in Gulf, especially those from Dakshina Kannada have greatly contributed towards the development of the region by remitting huge amount of money. “Now the Kannadigas in the Gulf are in trouble due to various developments such as Nitaqat. It is the responsibility of the government and elected representatives of the region to identify and aide those who have lost their Gulf jobs and helplessly returned home,” he said.

On the occasion the formation of Gulf Returnees’ Rehabilitation Committee (GRRC) was announced to exert pressure on the state government to fulfill its promises towards those who lost jobs in the Middle Eastern countries. It was also decided to conduct a job information workshop for the benefit of the Gulf returnees.

A resident of Deralakatte, who had worked in Saudi Arabia for 12 years before losing his job, said that his life was in jeopardy as he is neither getting a job in Gulf nor he has sufficient money to start a small business here. He is looking ahead for the fulfillment of the state government’s promise of providing loan to start up with self-employment.

Aboobakar Sadiq, a resident of Nandavara, said that he has been hunting for a suitable job to take care of his family after he had to leave the Saudi Arabia, where he had worked for six years.

“It’s been several months since I returned to India after working in Saudi Arabia for five years. But, I could neither start a business due to lack of money nor found a suitable job so far. If the government takes initiative to help people like us, we can start a new life,” said Sunil Joseph, a local resident.

ISF activists Nasir Kalabagilu, Ubaidullah Bantwal and Ibrahim Uppinangady were present.

Bengaluru, Jun 22: Concerned over the increase in COVID-19 cases in the city, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday directed officials to implement lockdown measures strictly in the clusters which have reported more infections.

Yediyurappa held a meeting with Ministers and senior officials regarding containing COVID-19 in Bengaluru and said it can be achieved only if preventive measures are implemented strictly and asked the officials to work in this direction.

"Lockdown shall be implemented strictly in the clusters which reported more cases, especially, K.R. Market and surrounding areas such as Siddapura, VV Puram, Kalasipalya etc. It was decided to seal the adjoining streets, where the cases are reported, a release from the Chief Minister's office said. Stringent action would be taken against those who violate quarantine norms and FIR would be filed if necessary, it said.

Till Sunday evening, the state capital has reported 1,272 cases of COVID-19, including 64 deaths and 411 discharges. On Sunday, as many as 196 fresh cases were recorded. Officers were directed to ensure hygiene and provide other basic amenities to the people who were quarantined in the social welfare department's hostels and other government institutions.

"COVID-19 should be contained without affecting the economic activities in Bengaluru, which resumed recently," the Chief Minister said.

Noting that booth-level officers and volunteers were working to trace contacts and monitor quarantined persons, he said the COVID war room shall have real-time information on the availability of beds in various designated hospitals and facilitate treatment to the infected without loss of time.

A bulletin from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city civic body, said there were 298 active containment zones in the city. BBMP Commissioner B H Anil Kumar along with the Chamarajpet Congress MLA B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan visited a few slum areas in the city to take stock of the COVID-19 situation, officials said.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: Senior JDS leader H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday advised the Karnataka government to utilise the services of private medical colleges in treating Covid-19 patients, by taking them into confidence, instead of threatening them with license cancellation for not complying with directives.

He also said a concentrated effort should be taken in the fight against coronavirus. "It was wrong for any hospital to deny treatment. It is also not correct on part of the government to threaten the private medical colleges with cancellation of their licence for that reason. It won't be of any help at this time of medical emergency.

Remember that MCI has the authority to cancel licenses, not government," Kumaraswamy tweeted. "Instead of showing fury on private medical colleges at such a time, concentrate on taking their service by taking them into confidence. Look into their needs. I urge for a concentrated fight against coronavirus," he added.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had on Saturday convened a meeting with Private Medical College Hospitals regarding Covid management and directed them to provide 50 per cent of the beds as promised.

In another tweet, Kumaraswamy said the notice being put out by local administrations in front of coronavirus patient's house is leading to new age social discrimination and untouchability.

To ensure that infected patients and his family leads a respectable life, such a practice has to be dropped immediately. "..... instead health workers should be sent to their houses to educate and instill confidence in them," the former CM added.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: Karnataka and five other states have their coronavirus antibody test kits stuck in China because of the country's new policy of getting clearance from their government before a company exports its products.

Singapore-based Sensing Self Ltd and China’s Wondfo are the only companies that have cleared Pune's National Institute of Virology (NIV)’s validation for rapid antibody test kit.

Dr CN Manjunath, Director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and nodal officer for COVID-19 lab testing, Karnataka, said, "Inventory is ready in Hong Kong Airport. Karnataka's consignment is stuck with five other states' consignments: Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Meghalaya. On April 1 or 3, China's policy changed saying any exports going out of China has to be certified by the Chinese government."
