Mangaluru: Habitual offender tied to tree, beaten to death by villagers

Mangaluru, Feb 15: In a fresh case of mob justice, a 38-year-old resident of Thotadtady, a village near Belthangady, who was involved in cases of theft and other crimes, died after being assaulted by the residents of the village on the outskirts of Mangaluru on Monday.

beatenPeter, the victim, was among the two persons accused of stealing two bags of areca-nut from the house of Jacob in the village on Sunday.

On Monday, Peter was reportedly caught by the people, along with four bags of arecanut that had been allegedly stolen from another house. The people tied him to a tree and called the Belthangady police.

Before the police arrived, the village residents thrashed Peter black and blue, and he died before he could be taken to a hospital.

Superintendent of Police S.D. Sharanappa said that the village residents were angry against Peter for his involvement in theft and other offences. “But, this does not approve of taking law into their own hands and assaulting Peter,” Mr. Sharanappa said.

A case of murder has been registered. Mr. Sharanappa said that Peter was involved in nine criminal cases. A process had been initiated to extern him from the district. Peter had been arrested and lodged in the Mangaluru prison. He was released on bail a few days ago, he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Amping up the online payment experience for consumers, Razorpay, the leading full-stack financial services company, today launched a new product, Instant Refunds for businesses.

This new feature activates refunds and credits the customer's source account across payment methods such as credit card, net banking, and UPI within a minute of initiation.

India is one of the fastest-growing online retail markets today. About 71 per cent of internet users in the country purchase products online. Today, the refund process has two major pain points for both the end customer and the business.

First, a delay of five-seven business days for the customer in receiving the money because of multiple intermediaries like the acquiring bank, issuing bank and the networks (VISA/MasterCard/Rupay).

Second, the lack of transparency during the entire refund process for both the customer and the business. This long cycle of processing refunds is a significant problem with every popular payment method in the industry.

This new feature will also reduce the dependence on manpower as every refund issue on an average leads to ten service emails or calls from customer support teams.

Currently powering payments for over 800,000 businesses including the likes of Indigo, BSE, Thomas Cook, Reliance, SpiceJet, Aditya Birla, Sony, and Oyo, the team plans to increase this count to 1,400,000 by this year. The full-stack financial solutions company expects a 4x growth in its revenue by the end of the next fiscal year.

Udupi, May 20: All the six fishermen were rescued from a deep-sea fishing boat, which capsized after hitting a rock near Malpe here yesterday. 

The boat was owned by Reshma Kharvi. The incident occurred while the boat was returning after fishing to Malpe harbor. 

The helmsman lost control over the boat after steering got damaged and hit the rock and damaged. 

The crew of another boat which was near to the sinking boat immediately rushed and rescued six fishermen.

Attempts to rescue the sinking boat using the yet another boat could not materialise. 

The loss is said to be about Rs 80 lakh, including Rs. 5 lakh worth items, including fish, net, and other accessories. The boat ventured from Malpe port on May 14.
