Mangalore, Aug 26: The Haj pilgrims who are expected to leave for Saudi Arabia from this coastal city in a couple of days, are now busy with their last minute preparations.
The registration of pilgrims commenced on Saturday morning at the old terminal building of Mangaluru International Airport where the pilgrims are camping.
As per the procedure, pilgrims have to register at the old terminal of the airport two days before departure along with their luggage, confirmation card and Haj Committee receipt.
The process of registration launched with Moidu Kunhi Peruvai getting his name registered in his absence through his kin Abdul Hameed. Dozens of volunteers were assisting the pilgrims in registration process.
Mangalore Hajj Management Committee President Yenepoya Muhammad Kunhi, vice president Mahmoud Haji, secretary Haneef Haji, member K M Aboobakar Siddeeq were present among others.
780 pilgrims to fly from Mangaluru
Hajj flight operation from Mangalaluru is scheduled to commence from August 24. The first flight would leave at 4.15 p.m. from the old terminal of the airport. The State Haj Committee would organise a farewell for the pilgrims at 11 a.m. the same day. On July 25 and 26 the flights would take off at 12.55 p.m. and 4.15 p.m.
Nearly 6,000 pilgrims will participate in the pilgrimage from Karnataka. These pilgrims were selected from among 23,514 applicants, on the basis of draw of lots, except those aged above 70.
Over 4.48 lakh people have applied online for the pilgrimage in the country this season. However, Saudi Arabia offered a quota of 1.7 lakh to India. Of them, 45,000 would travel through private travel agencies, while 1.25 lakh would travel through Haj Committees.
Pilgrims from the State would leave from Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Goa and Hyderabad. As many as 780 pilgrims from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, Hassan and Chikkamagaluru districts would leave from Mangaluru.
