Mangaluru, Jun 8: A 25-year-old man, hailing from north Karnataka, has been arrested by the police on the charge of murdering a 22-year-old woman in Attavar in Mangaluru.

Anjana Vasist, 22, hailing from Tarikere in Chikkamagaluru district, was found dead in a room on Friday evening. She was reportedly strangled to death.

The Mangaluru South police on Saturday arrested Sandeep Rathod from his native place at Benakotagi tanda in Sindgi taluk of Vijayapura district.

According to the police, the two were in a relationship. The police said that Sandeep had finished the physical examination for the post of Police Sub Inspector and was preparing for the written examination. He had joined a tutorial in Mangaluru.

Anjana, who was awaiting her final year M.Sc. results, helped Sandeep find the room in Attavar on June 2 and also introduced herself as his wife to the house owner Louis Pais.

Anjana left for her native place soon after and returned to Attavar on Friday morning. Sandeep reportedly proposed marriage to her, which she refused. This reportedly led to a heated argument between the two after which Sandeep allegedly strangled her to death.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Hanumantharaya said that Sandeep confessed to the murder before the police.
