Mangaluru, Jan 16: The past experiences have enabled the officials in the Dakshina Kannada district administration and Mangaluru City Corporation to take precautionary measures to face any drinking water shortage in the coastal city.

Kavita Sanil, the Mayor of MCC, said that the water level at Thumbe Vented Dam across the Netravathi, the main source of water to Mangaluru, was one metre higher than that maintained last year.

The Mayor, who visited the dam on Monday, said that the civic body will not resort to water rationing this summer as water has been impound up to 6 metres at the dam.

“Unlike last year, we will not opt for water rationing as there is sufficient water to cater to the needs of people everyday,” she said and advised people not to waste water. With the present water level, the corporation can provide water daily till June, she said.

There was a steady inflow of water into the dam, said corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazir. “We are expecting the inflow to stop by next month. We will maintain this (6-metre) level all through this period (till June),” he said. Apart from 10.83 million cubic metre (mcm) of water at the Thumbe Dam, around 14 mcm water at the AMR Dam, which is upstream the Thumbe dam, will be available for use, he said.

Ms. Sanil said that she has acted as per the promise she made while taking over charge as Mayor and has ensured storage of water at the 6-metre level at Thumbe. She thanked, more so, the 37 residents of Sajipamunnoru, Bantwal Mooda and another village whose land was submerged after dam’s height was increased.

“Except for the portion of land that is submerged, I have not so far heard of any problem,” she said. These residents are being paid Rs. 39 lakh per month as rent. “If there are any problems, they are free to bring it to our notice. We will address them,” she added.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: The city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao has ordered a special inquiry by the additional commissioner in connection with sexual harassment on a girl hailing from Kasaragod and the allegation that there were attempts to convert her to another religion.

Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Shobha Karandlaje on Sunday met Rao along with the girl and gave a complaint that two youths from Kasargod had raped her and forced her to convert to their religion.

A complaint has been filed in the Kasargod police station, but no action has been taken against them. Since both the accused work in Electronics City police station jurisdiction, she urged the police to arrest them.

Rao said he was yet to gather information about the case and he had directed the additional commissioner to conduct a preliminary investigation and submit a report.

After filing a complaint, Shobha told reporters that she has been sexually harassed ever since she was a minor.

The MP said that the girl, who was brought from Kasaragod to Electronics City, where the accused youths run a business, was allegedly raped. “I have asked the Police Commissioner to direct the Electronics City police to register an FIR and arrest the youths,” she said.

“I have spoken to the survivor and she said that the youths were also forcing her to convert to Islam and threatened her with dire consequences if she did not,” the MP alleged.

Shobha went on to claim that there was a gang that could be operating to forcibly convert Hindu women to Islam. She also met Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa along with the girl’s family members and gave a petition.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: Three legislators of the opposition Congress in Karnataka, including 2 MLAs and 1 MLC tested positive for coronavirus and are under treatment, a party official said on Saturday.

"Our Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalgi in Belagavi district and Humnabad MLA Rajashekhar Patil and his MLC brother Chandrashekhar Patil in Bidar district tested positive for the infection and are under treatment at designated hospitals," party spokesman Ravi Gowda told media persons in Bangaluru.

Koujalgi's swab sample was taken on Friday after he showed signs of illness and its result turned positive earlier in the day.

"As Koujalgi attended a review meeting at Bailhongal, about 20 officials who participated in the meeting have been home quarantined," said Gowda.

Koujalgi is the second lawmaker in the state's northwest region to test positive after BJP's Belagavi North assembly segment MLA Anik Benake tested positive for the virus on July 15.

"Patil brothers were in self quarantine after meeting BJP's Bidar Lok Sabha member Bhagwanth Khuba, who tested positive on Wednesday. Their tests also showed they were infected with the virus," Gowda said.

Congress MLC Sandesh Nagaraj, who tested positive on Friday, is under treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru.

Dakshina Kannada district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai is in institutional quarantine in Bengaluru after he tested positive for the infection.
