Mangaluru: Minister urges Haj pilgrims to pray for peace in motherland

Mangaluru, Jul 4: U T Khader, minister for food, civil supplies and consumer affairs has requested the Haj aspirants from the coastal Karnataka not forget to pray for their motherland after reaching holy places like Makkah and Madinah.

Inaugurating the vaccination camp organised by the government for Haj pilgrims at Yenepoya Hospital in the city on Tuesday, he termed the Hajis as blessed ones whose prayers will be accepted by the Almighty.

“You are embarking on a sacred journey. Do not forget to pray for peace and prosperity in this country, this state and this region after reaching the holy lands,” he urged.

Speaking on the occasion, Sarfaraz Khan, Executive Office of State Haj Committee, said that as many as 565 Haj pilgrims from Dakshina Kannada district were being vaccinated in the camp.

Vaccination certificates of meningitis and oral polio vaccines were issued to the pilgrims. A checklist for Hajj pilgrims was also given to them to prepare for the pilgrimage. Vaccination of Hajj pilgrims prior to their departure to Saudi Arabia had to be done and certificate has to be issued as per requirements.

Karnataka State Hajj Committee made arrangements for administering the mandatory vaccine for meningitis-brain fever and also for polio drops in association with District Wakf advisory council at Yenepoya Hospital, here.

Y Muhammad Kunhi, president of Mangaluru Haj camp, presided over the programme. S M Rasheed, Secretary, Haj Management Committee were present among others on the occasion.

Bengaluru, Jun 20: Amid calls for boycott of Chinese products in the backdrop of Indo-China border face-off, former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy sought to know from the BJP government in Karnataka the status of the "Compete with China" policy brought during the previous JDS-Congress rule.

Boycotting Chinese products was not easy like sloganeering but required a creative policy and the coalition government's initiative was a model for it, he said in a series of tweets.

"After the border skirmish, some people got the realisation to boycott the Chinese products but during my tenure (as chief minister) a serious thought was given to it," the JDS leader said.

He was apparently referring to growing clamour for boycott of China-made products after a violent clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh left 20 Indian Army personnel dead early this week.

Mr Kumaraswamy said he had brought the Compete With China policy to effectively deal with the neighbouring country.

"My government's objective was to offer jobs to the local residents, snatch away market opportunities for China and discard the Chinese products."

"However, what has the present government done to our scheme? It is not known whether it is still continuing or not," Mr Kumaraswamy said.

The Kumarswamy government had identified clusters and earmarked Rs 2,000 crore for their development.

Mangaluru, Jan 17: An auto-mobile shop at Deralakatte here caught fire on Friday incurring huge loss on the shopkeeper.

According to police, the incident happened in the morning when the shop owner opened the shop.

Locals suspect that miscreants might have set the shop on fire and had escaped from the scene at night.

Mangaluru, Jun 12: A pregnant woman who returned from Maharashtra and tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, gave birth to a child at the Wenlock COVID-19 hospital in Mangaluru. After she experienced labour pain, a team of expert doctors performed the delivery through the caesarean section on Thursday.

Both the woman and the new born are safe, hospital sources said. The woman, who belongs to Kinnigoli in Dakshina Kannada district, had arrived in the city on Monday. She was in an advanced stage of pregnancy and was taken to another hospital the next day after she complained of weakness.

As she came from Maharashtra, she was shifted to a separate ward at the Wenlock hospital and quarantined. Her throat swab samples tested positive on Wednesday. A COVID-19 test will be done on the baby after a few days, district health officer Ramachandra Bairy said.
