The administration and residents are making all-out efforts to ease the impact of severe water famine which the district is undergoing, ranging from offering prayers to making alternative arrangements.

Mangaluru, known for its vibrant religious practices, on Thursday witnessed an all-religion prayer invoking the blessings of the Almighty for rain, led by Mangaluru South MLA J.R. Lobo.

Prayers were held at the historic Mangala Devi Temple, through which the city got its name, the Kudroli Jumma Masjid and the Chapel at the Bishop's house at Kodialbail. Leaders from various sections of society and residents participated in the prayer.

The administration, in its emergency meeting here, brainstormed over the high rates being charged by private water suppliers.

Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner H.N. Gopalakrishna said that the suppliers cannot collect more than Rs. 900 per tanker of 6,000 litres of water.

If anyone charges more, people may complain to the corporation on te Water Helpline which would be opened on Friday.

District in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai, who chaired the meeting, said that the district is severely affected by water crisis this time even as Mangaluru taluk has remained the worst-affected.

He said that villages such as Konaje, Balepuni, Kairangala, Sajipa Nadu, Harekala-Pavoor, Asaigoli, Amblamogaru, Ilyarpadavu and Deralakatte were facing severe water scarcity on the outskirts of Mangaluru.

Officials of gram panchayats concerned informed the meeting that alternative arrangements for water supply through tankers are being made.

Meanwhile, the administration permitted Mangalore University and Infosys in Mudipu to draw water for three hours every day from the mainline.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: The Karnataka government has asked all its departments and authorities to avoid during all official transactions the nomenclature "Dalit" for members belonging to the Scheduled Castes.

"All the departments and authorities of government of Karnataka are requested that (use of name Dalit) for all official transactions, matters, dealings, certificates, among others," the official circular said.

The Constitutional term Scheduled Caste in English and its appropriate translation in other national languages should alone be used for denoting the persons belonging to the Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes notified in the presidential orders issued under Article 341 of the Constitution, the circular said.

The circular issued on May 20 notes instructions issued by the Central government in 2018, with reference to the order of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior Bench.

"That the Central government/state government and its functionaries would refrain from using the nomenclature "Dalit" for the members belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as the same does not find mentioned in the Constitution or any statute," the order had said.

Pointing out that the Central government had earlier issued instructions that the words "Harijan" and "Girijan" should not be used, the circular said accordingly the Karnataka government also had issued a Government Order in 2010.

Bengaluru, May 23: It was a stampede-like situation near Palace Grounds in Bengaluru on Saturday afternoon. The incident took place after hundreds of migrants gathered and jostled to gain entry. The situation raises concerns as no social distancing norms were followed.

According to Chetan Singh Rathore, DCP Central, the reason behind the stampede-like situation was an en masse message. "What we heard was that an en masse message has been conveyed to the people of Manipur and Odisha that they would be able to go home on trains on Saturday. The message did not consider the capacity of the train which is only 1500 seating capacity for Manipur train and 1500 for Odisha train," he told media.

Singh further added, "But the people gathered were around 3000 in number for the Manipur train and 5000 for the Odisha train. Passengers with tickets and requisites were allowed to travel while others were asked to return home and wait for their turn to travel back home."

The state of Karnataka has eased lockdown restrictions across, allowing state transport services to run. Lately, the government has been running special Shramik trains from Karnataka to ferry migrant workers back to their hometowns.
