Mangaluru: Pilgrims leave for Hajj in five batches

Mangaluru, Jul 17: The flight carrying the first batch of Hajj pilgrims from the undivided Dakshina Kannada district left Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday.

While the first flight carried 150 pilgrims, a total of 747 pilgrims from Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Kodagu and Udupi districts will leave for Hajj. On Thursday, two batches with a total of 299 pilgrims will leave. On Friday, two more batches with 298 pilgrims will leave Mangaluru Airport.

The Hajj pilgrimage this year will include 610 people from Dakshina Kannada, 20 from Hassan, six from Chikkamagaluru, 39 from Kodagu and 72 from Udupi.

District In-charge Minister U T Khader, who addressed the programme held by the Mangaluru Haj Camp organising committee, appealed to the pilgrims to pray for peace and harmony in the country.

Minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan has sponsored the travel of 11 Ulemas from Dakshina Kannada. Dakshina Kannada Khazi Al Haj Twakha Ahmmed Musliyar blessed the occasion.

Karnataka State Haj Committee member K M Aboobakar Siddiq said that 8,739 pilgrims are leaving from Hajj from all over the country this year.

In a press release, Customs Additional Commissioner Imamuddin Ahmad has said that prominent boards have been displayed at the Mangaluru Airport to ensure that each pilgrim makes use of the customs facilities provided in the Rules, Procedures and Regulations. A special mention of the Citizen Charter of CBIC is also displayed prominently so that every passenger knows his enshrined Rights and Duties by the CBIC.

“In case of any doubts or issues regarding Customs formalities, the passenger should directly contact the Departure Superintendent for quick redressal. Mangalore Customs is committed to address any/all issues so as to ensure that every passenger is fully appraised and compliance maintained by each citizen. The team leader and assistant commissioner on duty are also available for help and guidance wherever required,” he has said.

Mandya, Aug 1: In a terrific incident, a college student has stabbed his own mother to death in Karnataka’s Mandya town over a trivial issue. The police have managed to nab the accused. 

According to police, the boy was irked by his mother rebuking him for staying out with his friends late in the night.

On Wednesday (July 29), she scolded him for not listening to her advice, following which he stabbed her to death, the official said. 

The student was arrested on July 30. He reportedly confessed to the crime. 

A police officer said that the woman was upset over her son frequently spending time with his friends till late in the night.

Bengaluru, Jul 17: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Mayor, M Goutham Kumar on Friday called for an extension of lockdown in the city for one more week due to rise in the COVID-19 cases.

"It will be better if we get more time to tackle COVID-19 cases, we wish for the extension of lockdown for one more week. We have given the proposal to the government," said M Goutham Kumar, BBMP Mayor.

"After the number of cases increased in Bengaluru, BBMP started antigen test in containment and hotspot zones of Bengaluru to tackle the cases which have crossed 2,000 mark," he added.

Along with Mayor, BBMP Commissioner Anil Kumar has also proposed the state government to extend lockdown in Bengaluru for one more week.

"The number of cases in Bengaluru increasing in Bengaluru rapidly. BBMP has inaugurated more than 200 vehicles in Bengaluru for the use of the antigen test," said Anil Kumar, Commissioner BBMP.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there are 51,422 COVID-19 cases in the state.

Bengaluru, July 25:  Karnataka reported 5,072 new COVID-19 positive cases and 72 deaths on Saturday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 90,942.

The total count includes 55,388 active cases and 1,796 deaths, the state health department said.

Meanwhile, a 100-year-old woman resident of Huvina Hadagali town in Bellary district here recovered from COVID-19 after testing positive for the virus earlier this month.

"Doctors treated me well. Along with regular food, I was eating an apple a day. The doctors are giving me tablets and injection, and I am healthy now. COVID-19 is like a common cold," said Hallamma while speaking to news agency.

The woman's son, daughter-in-law, and grandson had also tested positive for the virus, and the family was treated at their home.

India reported a spike of 48,916 coronavirus cases on Saturday, taking the total number of reported COVID-19 cases to 13,36,861, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total count include 4,56,071 active cases, 8,49,431 cured/discharged/migrated. With 757 deaths in the last 24 hours, the cumulative toll reached 31,358.
