Mangaluru, Apr 27: Officers of the Central Excise and Service Tax Commissionerate, Mangaluru, have arrested a managing director of a private firm for alleged service tax evasion of over Rs. 1.38 crore.

arrestedThe managing director was arrested on Tuesday and produced before N. Sunil Kumar Singh, Principal Senior Civil Judge and Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mangaluru, who remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days.

The firm was providing clearing and forwarding services, steamer agency services and custom house agency services, according to a release by Central Excise Commissioner M. Subramanyam here on Wednesday.

The firm, though was providing taxable services, had failed to discharge the appropriate service tax liability.

The service provider has not been crediting the service tax collected from the customers to the government.

“The firm has not been complying with even the basic provisions of the statute. They have will-fully mis-declared the value of taxable services or declared the value as nil in spite of providing taxable services of substantial value,” the release said.

The service tax collected but not paid to the government exchequer for more than six months exceeded Rs. 1 crore, the release said.

“It constituted an offence under Section 89(1)(d) of the Finance Act, 1994 thereby attracting imprisonment extending to seven years in terms of Section 89(1)(ii) of the Act. Further, such offences shall be cognisable as per Section 90 of the Finance Act,” the release said.

Bengaluru, May 30: Health Minister B Sriramulu banned the consumption of chewing tobacco in public places on Saturday, which is marked as World Tobacco Day. The ban would include chewing paan masala and spitting in public places.

In June 2013, the state banned the manufacture, storage, sale, or distribution of gutka and paan masala containing tobacco or nicotine as ingredients to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use. On October 26, 2016, the state proscribed all kinds of chewing tobacco, containing tobacco or nicotine or both in accordance with the Supreme Court order.

Karnataka is the second state in India to ban e-cigarettes. The state also prohibited single cigarettes. Until September 2019, the state counselled 15,698 patients in tobacco cessation centres set up in private dental colleges.

Bengaluru, Jul 3: Over 35 acres of land in nine villages on the outskirts of Bengaluru have been earmarked for burial and cremation of bodies of COVID-19 victims after concerns were raised over the safety of funerals being held in burial grounds located in residential areas.

Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru Urban District GN Shivamurthy issued an order setting apart about 35.5 acres in the villages under four Taluks of Bengaluru North, Bengaluru South, Anekal and Yelahanka.

The order directed the respective Tahsildars to register these chunks of land as reserved for burial grounds and not to use for any purpose.

According to the sources in the district administration, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu and Revenue Minister R Ashoka had directed the officials to identify places on the city outskirts to dispose of the bodies of COVID-19 victims.

Mr Sriramulu had on Wednesday said COVID-19 victims will not be laid to rest in burial grounds in the city and separate places will be earmarked on the outskirts in the backdrop of safety concerns raised by public.

He had also warned against unscientific disposal of used Personal Protection Equipment kits worn by the families of the victim for the final rites, referring to reports about such instances.

In some places, people have also expressed concern over bodies of those who died of the coronavirus being buried in their neighbourhood.
