Mangaluru: Senior Meteorologist, theatre artist G Srinivasan passes away

Mangaluru, Jun 19: Senior Retired Meteorologist, G Srinivasan (78), resident of Bejai-Kapikad near here, passed away at his residence on Monday morning following brief period of serious ailment. He is survived by his wife Rukmini, two sons, daughters-in-law and three grandchildren.

His elder son S. Nandagopal was formerly a correspondent of Times of India at Mangaluru and Bengaluru. He is presently running Centre for Integrated Learning, a city based NGO. His younger son Karthikeyan is an entrepreneur based at Hubli.

G. Srinivasan served in different capacities in the Indian Meteorological Department for three decades all over the country including Lakshadweep and Kolkota.

A dedicated Rotarian, he had been active in socio-cultural and religious circles in the city for more than five decades. He was also a talented theatre artist and was instrumental in establishing Kannada Kala Kendra in Mumbai and Bengaluru way back in the 60s.

Changing Ramanagara's name an insult to Sri Rama: HDK

Bengaluru, Jan 5: Lambasting Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa over the proposal to rename Ramanagara as Nava Bengaluru, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday said that such a move will be an insult to Lord Ram, after whom the district is named.

In a series of tweets, Kumaraswamy accused that renaming the district was a pretext to sell its fertile irrigated land to capitalists. Yediyurappa also wants to settle a score with me by renaming it, he alleged

"If Yediyurappa wishes to develop Ramanagara, he should release the funds allocated in the budget. If you want to develop it further, you will find support from me and my people. But, don't set fire to the districts' culture and identity by changing its name," he tweeted.

Eshapriya Teertha Swami to ascend ‘Paryaya Peeta’ on Jan 18

Udupi, Jan 7: Eshapriya Teertha Swamiji, who was appointed as the junior Swamiji of Admar Math, would be ascending the 'Paryaya Peeta' for the first time on January 18, Vishwapriya Theertha Swamiji of Admar Math said.

Speaking to the media at Admar Moola Math at Admar near Padubidri on Monday night Vishwapriya Teertha Swamiji of Admar Math said, 'I had performed my first Paryaya in 1988-90 with the help of Shri Vishwapriya Teertharu.

'The second Paryaya was performed independently by the order of Shri Vibudhesha Teertharu in 2004-06.

Karnataka govt proposes withdrawal of 46 cases against Sangh Parivar leaders; ‘No’, says top cop

Bengaluru, May 19: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa-led Karnataka government has recommended the withdrawal of 46 cases against leaders belonging to Sangh Parivar who had apparently involved in violence during the birth anniversary celebration of Tipu Sultan in the state.

These cases – ranging from very serious forms of assaults on Muslims to unlawful assembly – were registered across Karnataka between 2014 and 2018.

Among the cases recommended to be withdrawn include those registered against senior state BJP leader Sanjay Patil, VHP leader Swaroop Kalkundri, and several district level Bajrang Dal activists.

The government recommended withdrawal of these cases under Section 321 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on March 5.

The recommendations, however, have been opposed by three crucial law enforcement departments – Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP), Director-Department of prosecution and Government litigation and Law department.

While the DG & IGP has opined that these cases “cannot be withdrawn”, both the department of prosecution and law have observed that these are “not a fit case to withdraw”.
