Mangaluru: Seven families lose their houses as massive fire erupts in Pandeshwar

Mangaluru, Mar 24: A massive fire erupted at Dhoomappa compound in Pandeshwar last night partially destroying at least seven houses.

There are a total of nine houses in the compound. However, timely action by the fire personnel that rushed to the spot and succeeded in containing the blaze quickly, averted a major disaster.

The blaze would have spread to other houses in the densely populated area if the gas cylinders were not shifted to a safe location.

Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath who rushed to the spot said that temporary arrangements have been made for seven families who lost their homes in the blaze.

New Delhi, Jul 28: Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Sadananda Gowda on Monday said that India has proved that it is the "pharmacy of the world" in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a press conference here, Gowda said, "India is often referred to as 'the pharmacy of the world' and this has been proved true especially in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic when India continued to export critical life-saving medicines to the countries."

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Mansukh Mandviya said that three bulk drug parks will be developed in the country in partnership with the states at Rs 3,000 crores.

"Three bulk drug parks will be developed in the country in partnership with the states at Rs 3,000 crores. Four medical device parks will also be developed with a government grant of Rs 100 crores for one park," Mandaviya said.

Udupi, Mar 1: Acting on credible information, Udupi district police arrested five persons and seized 1.35 kg of crude gold worth Rs 56.99 lakh from the possession of the accused, custom department said on Sunday.

A case has been registered against four people at Kundapur and one at Byndoor on charges of gold smuggling. The accused were transporting gold from Calicut to Bhatkal, informed Joannes George, joint Commissioner of Customs.

Off these five accused, four persons were held at Kundapur, while other at Byndoor on Saturday evening.

Mangaluru, June 5: A local businessman was hacked to death while two of his relatives suffered critical injuries in a broad daylight attack by a group of miscreants at Mulki on the outskirts of the city today.

The victim has been identified as Abdul Lateef (38). He was proprieter of Align Gold, Moodbidri. His wife is an advocate in Moodbidri. 

Abdul Lateef's father-in-law Muneer and latter's son Hayat suffered stab injuries. They are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru. 

The attack took place near the Vijaya Bank in Mulki. 

According to sources, a gang of miscreants stabbed all three. While Abudl Lateef succumbed to his injuries, the other two are responding to the treatment. 

Police have registered a case. Investigations are on.
