Mangaluru, Dec 24: A group of leaders and activists of saffron outfits such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal on Saturday gathered at Kadri Sri Manjunatha temple to protest the action of authorities to contain ‘sound pollution’ following a complaint by a few Christian neighbours.

They demanded the immediate withdrawal of the restrictions limiting the sound of various programmes on the temple premises. “There should not be any double standards by the government. If restrictions on sound are to be clamped, it should be across all communities,” said VHP district president Jagadish Shenava.

Blanny D’Souza, a resident of an apartment near the temple, and eight others had petitioned the Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner (Endowment) in August 2016 seeking restriction on sound system on the temple premises for overnight programmes , including annual temple fair, mosaru kudike, Yakshagana and Nema (a ritual).

With no action from authorities, Mr. D’Souza made similar complaints to the Mayor and City Police Commissioner during the first week of December. Following these complaints, the Endowment Department limited the sound within the temple premises, including for two Yakshagana programmes.

Meanwhile, Varadaraja Baliga, one of the signatories, accused Mr D’Souza of misusing his signature and filed a police complaint. “I do not have any problem with the sound at night. My signature has been misused by Mr. D’Souza for a complaint that is politically motivated,” he complained.

Hassan, Mar 13: In what could have been a major tragedy, an under construction flyover across Hassan-Mangaluru railway level crossing, near the new KSRTC Bus stand here collapsed today.

Fortunately no casualties occurred despite six concrete beems of 50 feet height, collapsed and broke into pieces.

The much awaited project was completely neglected by the successive governments for over a decade due to politics.  It was sanctioned eight months ago.

The Rs 42 crore project was taken up by a joint venture between state, center and South Eastern railway. The contractor or the Engineer were not present when the incident occurred.

Blaming the contractor, the locals alleged that poor quality of work led to the incident. No contractor or engineer was present even during construction, they added. Siddaiah, who runs an eatery near KSRTC bus stand said that it could have been a major tragedy if people were underneath the flyover when it crashed. The incident should be probe and the contractor should be punished, he added.

Mandya, Jun 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised an 83-year-old farmer from Malavalli taluk in Mandya district of Karnataka for his efforts in water conservation.

While urging the people to focus on saving water, Modi, in his 'Man Ki Baat' on All India Radio quoted Kamegowda from Dasna Doddi village who single handedly dug small 16 ponds over the years in his farm land and in nearby hill while taking his animals for grazing.

"Kamegowda ji is an ordinary farmer, albeit possessing an extraordinary personality. He has achieved a personal feat that will leave anyone awestruck! Kamegowda ji, aged 80-85 takes out his animals for grazing but at the same time he has taken it upon himself to build new ponds in his area", the PM said in his Mann Ki Baat, a monthly radio address on Sunday.

To overcome problems of water scarcity in the area, Gowda started building small ponds. Thereby, he contributed a lot for water conservation, the PM said.

"... An octagenerarian like Kamegowda ji, till now, has dug 16 ponds through his hard work and the sweat of his brow. It is possible that the ponds he has constructed may not be very big but then his efforts are huge. Today, the entire area has got a new lease of life on account of these ponds," the PM said.

A little effort by us helps nature and environment quite significantly. Many of our countrymen are putting extraordinary efforts in this endeavour, the PM said.

Kamegowda, used to take his sheep and goats to nearby hill for grazing. After finding no water to sheeps, he started digging ponds to address water scarcity. With collection of rain water, these lakes are brimming with water even during peak summer.
