Mangaluru tense for second day over murder; bandh in Surathkal, surrounding towns

Mangaluru, Jan 4: The situation in parts of Mangaluru taluk remained volatile for a second day running, with thousands of activists of BJP, VHP and Bajragng Dal gathering in Katipalla and imposing bandh in Surathkal and surrounding areas on Thursday in protest against the murder of Deepak Rao, who was hacked to death yesterday by four miscreants.

The police on Thursday morning aborted the funeral procession planned by the saffron groups by secretly transporting the dead body of the victim from AJ Hospital to his home in Katipalla, about 15 kilometres from the city. However, thousands of people gathered in front of the victim’s house and staged protest to exert pressure on the police to allow them to take out funeral procession in spite of the prohibitory orders.

Meanwhile, all the business establishments and education institutions in Surathkal, Krishinapura, Katipalla, Chokkabettu and surrounding areas remained closed on Thursday. City buses and auto rickshaws too remained off the road in the area. Yesterday miscreants had pelted stones at two buses and damaged windows.

Even though police managed to catch all the accused in the murder case, the miscreants continued to unleash violence in the area and attacked two innocent Muslim youth last evening without any provocation.

Taking note of the situation, the home department directed M Chandra Sekhar, former police commissioner of Mangaluru City Commissionerate, to rush to the trouble-torn zone and take immediate measures to bring the situation under control. At least six KSRP platoons and over 500 personnel have been deployed in the affected area to prevent any untoward incidents.

Mangaluru, Jun 13: A bus agent died after the compound wall of his house collapsed on him at Matadagudde, near Gurupura-Kaikamba, on Friday afternoon. This is the first rain-related death reported in Dakshina Kannada.

The victim is Narayana Naika, 52. According to police, heavy rain on Friday afternoon blocked a small water stream adjacent to his compound wall, and the deceased was clearing it. The stone compound wall then suddenly collapsed on him, and he got buried underneath. He sustained grievous head injuries and died on the way to hospital.

Narayana is survived by his wife and two children.

Dakshina Kannada received an average rainfall of 26.1mm in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Friday. The highest rainfall was recorded at Puttur and Mangaluru taluks at 31.3mm and 30.3mm, respectively. Bantwal and Sullia taluks received 26.3mm and 24.6mm of rain, respectively.

Udupi, July 23: A 70-year-old woman, who had tested positive for coronavirus, passed away last night in Udupi taking the district’s covid-19 death toll to 12.

The deceased was a resident of Chantharu in Brahmavar. She was an asthma patient. For past few days, she was suffering from cold and fever. 

Her throat swabs were sent for testing and the report came positive last evening. She breathed her last at home even before being shifted to hospital. 

The woman has two daughters and both of them are married. Due to the fear of virus, none of her relatives were ready to touch her body.

Meanwhile, Dr Premananda K of district health department reportedly sought help of the activists of Popular Front of India (PFI). 

Under the supervision of PFI’s medical wing in-charge Muneer Kalmadi, the body was shifted to the district hospital with all necessary precautionary measures.

New Delhi, Apr 25: Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar on Saturday said that a journalist from Bangalore Urban, who has tested positive for COVID-19, is one out of 15 new cases reported in the state.

He further said that out of the 15 new coronavirus cases, six each are from Bangalore Urban and Belagavi and one each from Mandya, Chikkaballapura and Dakshin Kannada. The state's tally is now 489.

"#COVID19 Update: From 5 pm, 24th April till 12 noon today. A total of 489 cases, 15 positives, 18 deaths & 183 discharges," Sudhakar tweeted.

India's total number of coronavirus positive cases has climbed to 24,506 including 18,668 active cases, 5,063 cured/discharged/migrated and 775 deaths, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said today.
