Mangaluru Violence: KSHRC to hear on Dec 31

Mangaluru, Dec 27: The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) will conduct a hearing into the alleged police brutality during the December 19 anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stir in Mangaluru on December 31.

The KSHRC had received complaints from Bengaluru-based Advocate Rakshith Shivaram, Mahila Congress national social media coordinator Lavanya Ballal, Bantwal Town Municipality councillors – Luqman Bantwal and Monish Ali urging them to initiate ‘suo motto’ action against the Mangaluru Police commissioner and other officers responsible for the "firing" which claimed two lives. They have also appealed to provide justice to the victims.

The city police violated the human rights guaranteed to the citizens of the country under the constitution as well as the UN Charter, it is stated in the complaint.

Mangaluru, Jan 31: The Pumpwell flyover, part of the four-laning of Talapady-Kundapura stretch of National Highway 66, was finally inaugurated today.

Work on four-laning NH 66 between Talapady-Kundapur, excluding the Nanthoor-NITK Surathkal stretch, started in September 2010 and Pumpwell (Mahaveera Circle) flyover was a part of the project. Concessionnaire M/s Navayuga Udupi Tollway Pvt., Ltd., failed to execute many flyovers on the stretch within the prescribed time, including Thokkottu and Pumpwell in Mangaluru, Karavali Circle in Udupi, and Shasri Circle in Kundapur.

Thokkottu and Karavali Circle flyovers are complete now while Shastri Circle flyover as well as the four-lane road within Kundapur town are still incomplete. Similarly, a small bridge and portion of the road in Padubidri too is yet to be completed.

MLA Vedavayas Kamath, MLA Bharath Shetty were also present on the occasion.

Mangaluru/Udupi, June 28: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have recorded 97 and 40 fresh coronavirus positive cases in last 24 hours. 

With the highest single day spike, the total covid-19 positive cases in Dakshina Kannada mounted to 665, among which 272 cases are now active.

So far 313 people have recovered and discharged from the hospitals. 13 covid-19 patients have passed away. Two among them have died due to non covid reasons. 

With the 40 fresh cases, Udupi’s total mounted to 1179, among which only 135 cases are active. 1042 people have recovered and discharged from the hospitals. Two people passed away.

Mangaluru, Aug 3: As part of precautionary measures in the region during Bhoomi Pujan in Ayodhya, prohibitory orders under Section 144 will be imposed under the limits of Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate. 

The Section 144 will be in force from 8 p.m. on Tuesday (August 4) to 6 a.m. on Thursday (August 6)

Sources said that the city police commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikash has taken this step following reports about possibility of protests in Mangaluru during Bhoomi Pujan.  

The top cop has warned of stringent action against those who violate the prohibitory orders.
