Mangaluru Violence: KSHRC to hear on Dec 31

Mangaluru, Dec 27: The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) will conduct a hearing into the alleged police brutality during the December 19 anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stir in Mangaluru on December 31.

The KSHRC had received complaints from Bengaluru-based Advocate Rakshith Shivaram, Mahila Congress national social media coordinator Lavanya Ballal, Bantwal Town Municipality councillors – Luqman Bantwal and Monish Ali urging them to initiate ‘suo motto’ action against the Mangaluru Police commissioner and other officers responsible for the "firing" which claimed two lives. They have also appealed to provide justice to the victims.

The city police violated the human rights guaranteed to the citizens of the country under the constitution as well as the UN Charter, it is stated in the complaint.

Udupi, Jun 18: Two youths lost their lives in a ghastly road mishap involving a vegetable-laden mini truck near Santhekatte in Udupi today. 

The deceased have been identified as Dinesh (35) and Manjunath (21), both hailed from Balkur village in Kundapur taluk.

The accident took place at around 7 a.m. when the mini truck was carrying vegetables from Kundapur to Udupi. 

According to sources, Dinesh, who was driving the vehicle, lost control and rammed into a pole next to the national highway. 

Both Dinesh and his assistant Manjunath suffered head injuries in the accident. They were rushed to Ajjarkad district hospital where they were declared dead on arrival.

Bengaluru,  Jul 21: The salaries of doctors under the National Health Mission (NHM) has been hiked to Rs 45,000 in Karnataka, according to Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar.

Addressing the media on Monday, Dr Sudhakar said that the state government will bear the cost of the hike in salaries of the doctors and added that ASHA workers too will get a hike in their pay soon.

Regarding the COVID-19 management in the state, he further said that testing will be increased in the containment zones.

During a meeting chaired by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, the Education Minister said that it had been decided that booth level committees will conduct door to door survey for early detection of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), and vulnerable persons.

He also implored private hospitals to admit and treat COVID-19 patients and asked them to not be hesitant in admitting pregnant women.

Karnataka on Monday reported 3,648 COVID-19 cases taking the tally to 67,420, informed the state health department.

According to a bulletin issued by the department, the state recorded 72 more deaths due to COVID-19 with the toll at 1,403 while six patients who tested positive for the infection have died due to non-COVID causes, as of Monday. There are 42,216 active cases in the state.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: A woman suffered critical injuries after a speeding car knocked down her scooter and then ran over her at Kadri Kambla Junction in the city today.

The woman identified as Vanishri Bhat (22) a resident of Kedila from Puttur. 

A CCTV footage of the accident, which went viral on social media, shows the car hitting the scooter, pushing the woman on road for a couple of meters before climbing over her.

The car stopped when she was under it. A few people including a policeman lifted the car from the front and rescued the woman. 

She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader’s car which was passing through that way. 

She has suffered critical injuries on her head, ribs, hands and legs, sources said. She is reportedly responding to treatment. 

It may be recalled that in December last year a lorry-auto accident at the same spot claimed life of a 56-year-old teacher while the auto driver miraculously survived. Following the accident, speed breakers were installed at the junction.
