Mangaluru Violence: KSHRC to hear on Dec 31

Mangaluru, Dec 27: The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) will conduct a hearing into the alleged police brutality during the December 19 anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stir in Mangaluru on December 31.

The KSHRC had received complaints from Bengaluru-based Advocate Rakshith Shivaram, Mahila Congress national social media coordinator Lavanya Ballal, Bantwal Town Municipality councillors – Luqman Bantwal and Monish Ali urging them to initiate ‘suo motto’ action against the Mangaluru Police commissioner and other officers responsible for the "firing" which claimed two lives. They have also appealed to provide justice to the victims.

The city police violated the human rights guaranteed to the citizens of the country under the constitution as well as the UN Charter, it is stated in the complaint.

New Delhi, Feb 26: The death toll in northeast Delhi communal violence over the amended citizenship law rose to 20 on Wednesday, according to GTB Hospital authorities.

On Tuesday, the death toll was 13.

"The death toll has risen to 20 today," Medical Superintendent of GTB Hospital, Sunil Kumar, told PTI.

Earlier, at least four bodies were brought to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital from the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital, a senior official said.

Bengaluru, Feb 16: The Central Crime Branch has recovered blank firearms from Saddaguntepalya Police Station limits.

As of now, two persons have been arrested in this regard. They have been identified as Mohd Junaid and Mohd Tabrez. The officials have recovered 28 blank firearms and 76 blank bullets.

"The two accused -- without having any license -- were in possession of these huge number of weapons," Sandeep Patil, Joint CP, Crime, told media.

As per the preliminary investigation, there has been no record of such cases in Bengaluru. "But we are verifying if other states have any (such) case," added the Joint CP

According to investigations, it was noted that the weapons were purchased from Mumbai at an estimated cost of Rs 1 lakh per weapon.

Further investigation is currently underway.

Hassan, July 31: A police sub-inspector (PSI) reportedly hanged himself at his official quarters in Channarayapatna town today morning.

The deceased has been identified as Kiran Kumar, 34, who was in charge of Channarayapatna rural police station.

Sources said that he was upset after two murder cases were reported in the last 24 hours in his limits. Kiran reportedly told colleagues an hour before the extreme step that he feared he would be suspended.  

According to locals, the SI was upset after news of the two murders due to alleged negligence of the police spread on social media. He killed himself before a visit by senior officials. IGP, southern range, and SP Srinivasagowda was planning to visit the town and the spots where the murders took place on Friday.

Kiran, a native of Lalanakere village in Arsikere taluk, was known for his rapport with local people. He was alone when the incident took place. His wife and children had gone to Lalanakere for the Varamahalakashmi festival on Thursday night. The body was shifted to the mortuary for a postmortem.
