Mangaluru, May 12: The severe water crisis in this coastal city is in fact an artificial creation by the Mangaluru City Corporation to help the mafia engaged in sand extraction in the Netravathi, according to BJP leader and former district-in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar.

Addressing media persons here on Thursday the minister said: “Usually the MCC officials fix gates at the Thumbe vented dam, supplying water for both drinking and industries, during November-December. But this year the gates were installed during January-February, a delay by over a month in installing the gates to store water at the dam. It was specifically to help the mafia engaged in sand extraction in the river on the upstream of the dam.”

The minister alleged that if the dam was full it was difficult for mining. The corporation has succumbed to the pressure by sand mafia. He said if water would have been stored in the dam from November itself it would have helped in re-charging of ground water on the river bank and the storage would have lasted for more days thus helping the civic body to draw water for more days.

He alleged that the move to install gates late was also to ensure that the business of supplying water through tankers thrived. The former Minister in the BJP-led State government said that now the corporation and the district administration was “shedding crocodile tears” over the scarcity.

Mr. Palemar said that supplying water through tankers without checking the quality of water being drawn from wells was dangerous to health. “It might result the breaking of communicable diseases,” he said.

The former Mayor M. Shankar Bhat said here on Thursday that the corporation should first disconnect unauthorised pipelines from the two 18-MGD (million gallons a day) capacity main pipelines of the corporation supplying water from Thumbe dam to the city. Water was being stolen between Thumbe and Padil through unauthorised pipelines.

Addressing presspersons along with the former Minister J. Krishna Palemar, he claimed that when he was the Mayor he had disconnected 95 such unauthorised pipelines. As a result there was five per cent difference in the quantity of water being pumped at Thumbe and received in the city.

Now the difference was 35 per cent. It showed that there were many such illegal pipelines now, he said.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: Gyms in Bengaluru carried out sanitation work on Thursday following the Centre's nod to reopen gyms from August 5, after several weeks of COVID-induced lockdowns.

"We are taking all the precautionary measures prescribed by the government and will follow the guidelines very strictly. A thermal scanner, oximeter and hand sanitizers have been placed at the entrance of the gym.

We request all other gym owners also to follow the guidelines strictly to keep their members safe and healthy," said Prasad Kumar, a gym owner in Bangalore.

He added, "The last few months have been very difficult for us gym owners and fitness instructors. We are very grateful to the government for allowing us to re-open.

We are going to be very cautious when we open. Even before this COVID-19 pandemic, we used to sanitise all the equipment before and after every use so hopefully, this won't be too difficult for us. We are getting rid of the air conditioners to allow cross ventilation and open the space a little more."

According to Chandu Gowda, an actor and frequenter of the gym, working out at home was not the same as working out in the gym with the proper equipment.

"I'm very glad that I get to come back and work out as I used to before this lockdown. For an actor, working out is extremely important, not just for my physical health but also mental health.

Doing exercises at home is never as good as exercising in a space dedicated to one purpose. I hope other members of the gym follow the rules and regulations religiously," Gowda said.

Belagavi, Feb 10: In comments that raised eyebrows, Ramesh Jarkiholi, who quit the Congress and joined the BJP and who took oath as minister last week, said his brother Satish has a bright future. The two siblings have rarely seen eye-to-eye — at least in public — in recent times.

He also trained his gun on Congress leader DK Shivakumar, sarcastically thanking the Congress MLA for his meteoric rise. “Had Shivakumar not stood against me, I would not have emerged as a tall leader in the state. I must thank him,” Ramesh said.

The Gokak MLA said Satish of the Congress, the most politically-savvy of the five Jarkiholi siblings, would reach “the top” in his political career. However, he advised him “to inculcate patience and adopt strategies”. “He should make his moves at the right time as timing is very important in politics,” Ramesh said.

He also urged Satish to keep his supporters happy. “Many of his followers are disappointed with his leadership because he does not extend a helping hand to his own people. In the present political climate, people do not endorse a leader who only talks about Buddha and Basava,” Ramesh said.

Ramesh took a dig at Lakan, the youngest sibling, saying, “Lakan speaks ill about me most of the time. He does not understand much. But we brothers are one when it comes to family. We are united when it comes to family matters, but when it comes to politics, we are at loggerheads.”
