Mangaluru: Youth dies as car hits tree

Mangaluru, Jul 27: A 22-year-old youth died after the vehicle in which he was travelling rammed into a tree near Gurupura Kaikamba in Bajpe police station limits on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Muneer (22), a resident of Jokatte village, who was working for a stockist of grocery items in Bajpe.

On Tuesday, he was on the way to deliver grocery items to different shops. He was transporting the grocery items in his employer's car.

The police said that the driver lost control over his vehicle while going down the road leading to Mangaluru and hit a roadside tree.

Muneer was shifted to a private hospital in Moodbidri where he died of injury.

Mangaluru, Aug 3: As part of precautionary measures in the region during Bhoomi Pujan in Ayodhya, prohibitory orders under Section 144 will be imposed under the limits of Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate. 

The Section 144 will be in force from 8 p.m. on Tuesday (August 4) to 6 a.m. on Thursday (August 6)

Sources said that the city police commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikash has taken this step following reports about possibility of protests in Mangaluru during Bhoomi Pujan.  

The top cop has warned of stringent action against those who violate the prohibitory orders.

Jun 19: BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray should sign an agreement with neighbouring Karnataka to avoid a repeat of flood in part of the state like it happened in August last year.

In August 2019, Kolhapur, Sangli districts and some other parts of the state faced unprecedented floods triggered by huge release of water from dams in western Maharashtra and from the Almatti dam in Karnataka.

Fadnavis said, The Maharashtra chief minister should hold an urgent meeting with the Karnataka chief minister and enter into an agreement over-discharge of water from the Almatti dam located on the border of both the states."

If water is not released from the Almatti dam in time, it will cause flooding in border areas of Maharashtra such as Kolhapur and Sangli.

"A pact between the two states would benefit both as it would help in keeping water levels in control, the former chief minister said.

The dams in the state already have sizeable water stock. It would be better if the chief minster schedules a meeting with the Karnataka chief minister regarding the same (agreement), the Leader of Opposition in the assembly said.

Mangaluru, Aug 1: A teenage boy, who was critically injured in a road accident at Manchi village in Bantwal taluk, breathed his last at a private hospital in the city today.

The victim has been identified as Mohammad Unais (17), a resident of Bolanthoor village.  

The mishap occurred yesterday (July 31) at around 6 p.m. when Unais was riding a motorbike.

In his bid to overtake a speeding lorry near the Manchi mosque, the boy lost control over his motorbike, which first rammed into an auto-rickshaw and then collided with the same lorry. 

The impact was such that the boy was thrown onto the road. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru. 

He breathed his last early today without responding to any treatment. 

A case has been registered at jurisdictional Melkar Traffic Police Station and investigations are on.
