Mangaluru: Youth dies in hospital a day after attack near Konaje

Mangaluru, Oct 23: A day after he was allegedly attacked by miscreants, a 27-year-old youth from Pajir village breathed his last at a private hospital in Deralakatte on Sunday.

Karthik Raj (27), son of BJP activist Umesh was was found lying in a pool of blood in an unconscious at Asaigoli near Konaje on the outskirts of the city on Saturday morning.

Though initially it was suspected that it might be a case of hit-and-run, later assault injuries were found on his head.

It is learnt that Karthik used to walk every day morning from his home to Asaigoli and then go to a gym on a motorbike along with his friend.

On Saturday also he left home as usually, but did not meet his friend. It is suspected that he was attacked by miscreants when he reached near Ganesh Mahal at Asaigoli.

Local residents, who noticed the youth lying on the roadside, informed the police and took him to a hospital. Sources said that his condition continued to worsen and died in the wee hours of Sunday.

A case has been registered at Konaje police station and investigations are on.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 30: With suicide cases being reported from various parts of the state after liquor sales were stopped in Kerala following the lockdown, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed the Excise Department to provide liquor to those with a prescription from a doctor.

The move comes after many reportedly showed acute withdrawal symptoms and suicide cases were reported in the state.

On Saturday, in Kodungaloor in Thrissur district, a youth committed suicide by jumping into the river after suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

In another incident, a 38-year-old man working in a barbershop in Kayamkulam consumed shaving lotion after he didn't get alcohol. Though he was taken to hospital after he developed uneasiness, he died.

The Kerala government has also asked the Excise Department to provide free treatment and admit people with withdrawal symptoms to the de-addiction centres.

The Chief Minister has said the government is also considering the option of online sale of liquor as the sudden unavailability of alcohol may lead to social problems.

Mangalore, Jan 12: City police on Sunday arrested five people for their alleged involvement in a Rs 50 crore fraud by promising people higher monetary returns.

Police said that the arrested persons are Manjunath Nayak, a resident of Derebail; Denzil Mascarenhas, a Konchady resident; Ashok Naik, a Derebail resident; Vikas Nayak and Vishwanath Naik both residents of Bengaluru were arrested.

The arrested were employed in the ‘Speak and Group’ concern, started by Dhanush M K of Kundapur along with his friends. The firm had managed to collect huge sums of money from people, including NRIs by promising monthly four percent returns on their investment. The employees managed to entice people by showing them a few insurance schemes claiming higher returns.

Bengaluru, Jun 8: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday fielded Eranna Kadadi and Ashok Gasti as it's candidates for the June 19 Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka, ignoring the recommendations of the state BJP unit.

The state unit had recommended the names of Prabhakar Kore, Ramesh Katti and Prakash Shetty.

The names of the two candidates were announced in a party statement in Delhi.

The election is scheduled on June 19 to fill four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka, represented by Rajeev Gowda and BK Hariprasad of Congress, Prabhakar Kore of BJP and D Kupendra Reddy of JD(S) that will fall vacant on June 25, with their retirement.

June 9 is the last date for filing nominations. Party sources said both Kadadi and Gasti come from an RSS background.

Kadadi hails from Belagavi, while Gasti is a resident of Raichur.

The 54-year-old Eranna Kadadi started his active political career in 1989 and unsuccessfully contested the assembly election from Arambhavi constituency in 1994 on a BJP ticket.

He had also served as the Belagavi district Panchayat president in 2010.

Ashok Gasti is a lawyer by profession and former general secretary of the BJP's OBC Cell.

He is the former chairperson of the Backward Class Development Corporation.
