Mangaluru youth dies in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh, Sept 19: A young expatriate worker hailing from Natekal Urumani village on the outskirts of South Indian port city of Mangaluru, died of heart attack in Saudi Arabia.

Mohammad Ashraf (38) was buried at Naseem grave yard at Gornata in Riyadh region with the assistance of Karnataka Cultural Foundation after receiving consent from the family members.

He was working at a supermarket in Gornata for past few years. He suffered a massive heart attack in the wee hours of Sunday within a couple of hours after he slept in his room after his night shift.

He had got married during his last visit to Mangaluru a year ago. He was supposed to return home on a vacation on October 6.

Manjeshwar, Jul 8: Manjeshwar police arrested a man with 10 Kg of Ganja while fleeing away from a checkpoint at Battippadavu last night.

The police said on Wednesday that since the vehicle did not stop they had to chase it and after going some distance the driver lost control over the steering and it met with an accident.

The police immediately arrested the accused and the ganja was found concealed in a gunny bag.

Mangaluru, Mar 27: In the wake of coronavirus, the Council of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has taken steps to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the city as a task force has been formed to monitor home delivery of essentials and the situation prevailing in the city due to outbreak of the virus.

MCC commissioner Shanady Ajith Kumar Hegde held a meeting of wholesalers to plan the smooth supply of essentials to the people on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, the wholesalers of the city have been directed to supply essential goods to apartments in the city. Each apartment should prepare purchase details and must hand it over to the wholesalers. This way residents will not have to go out to buy essentials. The purchasing time will be between 6 am to 12 pm.

Udupi, Mar 1: Acting on credible information, Udupi district police arrested five persons and seized 1.35 kg of crude gold worth Rs 56.99 lakh from the possession of the accused, custom department said on Sunday.

A case has been registered against four people at Kundapur and one at Byndoor on charges of gold smuggling. The accused were transporting gold from Calicut to Bhatkal, informed Joannes George, joint Commissioner of Customs.

Off these five accused, four persons were held at Kundapur, while other at Byndoor on Saturday evening.
