Mangaluru: Youth murdered by friend for loving his sister

Mangaluru, Jan 7: The CCB sleuths of Manglauru city police have arrested three persons in connection with a murder of a 26-year-old youth at Panjimogeru in Kavoor police station limits. 

The arrested are Sunil Kumar, 26, a resident of Panjimogeru, Kavoor, Praveen Poojary alias Chotu, 23, from Kodikal and Preetham alias Abhi, 22, a resident of Urwa Store.

On the night of January 3, Rakesh (26), a daily wage labourer, was murdered as he was in love with prime accused Sunil Kumar’s sister. Despite issuing multiple warnings, he had continued his affair with the girl.

Rakesh and Sunil were friends but parted ways over a trivial issue. Rakesh and all the three accused have a criminal background.

Sunil has been previously booked by the Bajpe police under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act on charges of extorting businessmen upon directions from underworld fugitive Kali Yogish in 2014. 

Two cases of assault are also registered against him at Urwa police station. Praveen has been previously booked by the Mangaluru East police for committing dacoity, Mangaluru South police for an attempt to murder case and ganja peddling by Alanahalli police in Mysuru. Preetham faces two cases of assault and a case for ganja peddling.

All three accused have been handed over to the Kavoor police.

Mangaluru, June 1: The private bus services resumed services in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts today with 15 per cent hike in the fares. For 70 days these buses were stayed off the roads as lockdown was imposed in the region on March 22 in the wake of covid-19 outbreak.

Buses were sanitised in the morning. The bus operators have decided to operate only a few of the buses initially.

Of the about 2,000 service buses (inter-district buses and long-route buses within the district) of private operators in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, only 25% resumed services. Only 135 out of 320 city buses in Mangaluru resumed services.

The number of passengers on board the buses were also very less in the morning. A few buses had arranged sanitisers for passengers, drivers and conductors.

Udupi, May 31: As many as 10 people have been tested positive for coronavirus in Udupi district today. 

The district has registered a total of 187 positive cases so far. Majority of the positive cases in Udupi district have inter-state travel history to Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, 14 people including three children who recovered from COVID -19 discharged from Government Hospital in Kundapura, in Udupi district.

Kundapura AC Raju, DHO Dr Sudhirchandra Sooda, taluk medical officer Dr Nagabhushan Udupa handed over a rose to all the discharged. With this, a total of 64 persons have been recovered and discharged in the district.

Udupi, Apr 21:  Four walk-in sample collection units for COVID-19 test has been installed in the district, sources said on Monday.

The units have been installed at Udupi’s T M A Pai Hospital and district hospital and at Kundapura and Karkala taluk hospitals by Indian Medical Association, Udupi Branch along with Rotary Club and Red Cross Society.

Udupi district was declared COVID-19-free after all three COVID-19 positive patients were discharged after recovery and were now in home quarantine, the sources added.
