Mangaluru/Udupi, Apr 20: Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) along with the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines used in April 18 Lok Sabha election in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi-Chikkamgaluru constituencies have now been kept in strong rooms at the National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NITK) in Surathkal and St Cecily’s School in Udupi respectively. The counting of votes will be taken up on May 23.
The strong rooms were sealed in the presence of Deputy Commissioners and Election Observers respective districts on Friday. Special security with CCTV cameras has been provided to the building in which the EVMs have been kept.
The Central Paramilitary Force and the district police are keeping round-the-clock vigil around the buildings.
To prevent any untoward incident, short circuit or accidental outbreak of fire, the power connection to all strong rooms has been cut off.
Metal detectors have been installed at the entrances to the buildings housing the strong rooms at the counting centre. Only authorised persons can enter the school premises.
Both the constituencies comprise of eight assembly segments each. The EVMs of each one of the eight Assembly segments had been kept in individual strong rooms. Two strong rooms are required for every Assembly segment. The strong rooms were then locked and sealed.
