Manglauru: 2 saffron activists held on attempt to murder charges

Mangaluru, Nov 5: Two miscreants have been arrested by the Mangaluru city police on charges of attempting to murder a person from another community.

The accused have been identified as Sudarshan (24), a resident of Paduperar, Mangaluru and Jeevan (19), hailing from Permude.  Both of them said to be activists of a saffron outfit. They have been produced before the court.

An attempt to murder case was registered at Bajpe police station on October 29, after a few bike-borne men barged into the shop of Mohammed Ubaidullah at Bhatrakere Padil and assaulted him. Investigation is on.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: In order to bring down the accident rates, Karnataka government is planning to increase the penalty for road offences, state Transport Minister Laxman Savadi announced here on Thursday.

Addressing media persons here, he said, ''The Centre had brought an amendment to increase the penalty amount. We too have a similar proposal, which we will discuss, post the budget session.

''Before bringing in the amendment, we will create awareness among the road users. By increasing the penalty amount, the number of offences and accidents will come down,'' Mr Savadi added.

Mangaluru, Mar 29: The test report of the man from Uppoor in Udupi district, who committed suicide fearing he had contracted coronavirus infection, has returned negative for the virus.

Health department officials in Udupi said the post- mortem test report had shown that he did not have the virus infection and asked the people in the area not to panic.

Gopalakrishna Madivala (56), had hanged himself on Wednesday suspecting he had the disease, leaving a death note to family members asking them to stay safe.

Mangaluru, Feb 8: A speeding car fell off the newly-inaugurated Pumpwell flyover in the city after jumping the median and ramming into an oncoming car today. 

At least four persons have suffered injuries in the mishap involving a Maruti Alto and a Renault Duster. The condition of two is said to be extremely critical. The other two have suffered minor injuries.

The accident took place when the driver of the speeding Alto which was heading towards Kasaragod from Udupi lost control over his vehicle.

Towards the end of the flyover, car rammed into the divider and then hit the ill-fated Renault Duster which was coming from the opposite direction. The Alto then fell off the bridge. 

The accident caused traffic jam on the highway for some time. The flyover was inaugurated a week ago, after a decade long wait.
