Manipal, Apr 15: The Centre for Gandhian and Peace Studies, a constituent of Manipal University, will organise a seminar on “Understanding Islam” on its premises here on Saturday.

manipalA press release issued here on Thursday said that the seminar proposes to explore different dimensions of Islam as a religious culture with its own belief systems, philosophy, science, day-to-day practices, festivals, customs, diversity and reform movements.

It is an attempt to understand Islam in its diversity as practiced in different regions of the world, much against the image of being a stereotype. While there could be misunderstanding, primarily also due to lack of adequate knowledge about the practices, the seminar essentially makes an attempt to fill this gap.

The topics and speakers at the seminar include “Origin and Evolution of Islam” by Shariq Ahmad Khan, a student of Gandhian Studies and Communication from Manipal, “Basics of Contemporary Islam” by Zubair Ahmed, an engineering student from Hyderabad and “Sufism, Islam and women” by Nadeem Ahmed Moonakal, a student of Gandhian Studies and Communication from Manipal, the release said.

Bengaluru, Apr 12: The Karnataka government is studying in-depth the consequences of the possible relaxation of lockdown norms after April 14 and plans to come out with a clear roadmap in a day or two, a key Minister said on Sunday.

Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar, who is in charge of all matters related to COVID-19, told PTI that the pros and cons of any decision that the Government intends to take is being looked at in detail.

"We are trying to understand how the situation would be of any action that we intend to take. We need to foresee the repercussions or results of our action. That we have to keep it in mind and make a decision. After-effects of the decisions we intend to take, that is more important, he said. You will have clarity (on the possible relaxation of lockdown norms) in a day or two. For everything (government decisions) we will give the reasoning for what action we would like to take; with the reasoning, we will give a decision," the Minister added.

Government sources said some relaxation in liquor sales, stopped during the lock-down period, is likely after the ongoing 21-day national clampdown ends on April 14. Twelve of the state's 30 districts remain free from the COVID-19 pandemic. Till Saturday, Karnataka reported 215 COVID-19 positive cases, including six deaths and 39 discharges.

In the wake of Saudi Arabia's assurance that Masjid al-Haram of Makkah and Masjid an-Nabawi of Madinah will be opened for believers after some days, a message has gone viral on social media claiming that both the holy mosques will open on Ramadan 8 (May 1).

The message which was widely circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp, also contained certain condition such as people should fetch their own prayer mats and that they should not use the washrooms in the mosques.

Clarification

Meanwhile, the authorities of the two holy mosques, issued a clarification that the claims made in the viral post are false and baseless.

"The message being circulated about the opening date for Haramiain (two holy mosques) for public is completely baseless and false. The suspension of prayers for general public is still in effect," they said in a social media post.
