Manish Pandey, Shreyas Gopal ensure big win for Karnataka in Irani Trophy

March 21, 2015

Bengaluru, Mar 21: Manish Pandey’s scintillating century and leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal’s sterling bowling effort helped Ranji champions Karnataka retain the Irani Cup after beating Rest of India by a massive 246 runs on the fourth and penultimate day.

The moment of celebration came for the hosts after Pandey managed to uproot a stump as a souvenir after running out Varun Aaron.

Karnataka became only the second team to bag back-to-back Irani Cup titles. Mumbai had won back-to-back Irani title thrice, between 1962-63 to 1963-64, 1969-70 to 1970-71 and 1975-76 to 1976-77.

With this win, Karnataka rounded off the season with a grand treble just as they did a year ago by retaining the Ranji Trophy and winning the Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier in the season.

Gopal returned with impressive figures of four for 39 runs in six overs, while pacer Abhimanyu Mithun scalped three for 40 in his 10 overs to bowl out Rest of India for 156 in their second innings in 43.3 overs while chasing a mammoth target of 403 runs at the Chinnaswamy stadium.

Man-of-the-match Pandey won the laurels for his batting, but Gopal turned the tables around for Karnataka by taking four consecutive wickets after the visitors reached the score of 113.

He picked up the prized scalps of dangerous Kedar Jadhav (56), Jayant Yadav (10), Rishi Dhawan (10) and Shardul Tahkur (10).

Gopal first picked up Yadav by trapping him LBW, leaving Rest of India in precarious condition with the scoreboard reading 116 for six.

Thereafter, the leggie mericilessly and in quick succession removed Dhawan, Thakur and Jadhav to take Karnataka inches away from the victory.

Mithun also bowled his heart out in both Rest of India innings, ending with an impressive match figures of six for 86 off 27 overs.

“All credit goes to the boys. Dedication and desire key to Karnataka’s success. Batting in the fourth innings was difficult here because the cracks got wider. We had the bowling attack. We knew 300-plus runs would be difficult for them,” he said.

Resuming their second innings at 341 for six, Karnataka added another 81 runs before ending at 422, thereby setting a target of 403 to win before Rest of India.

Pandey, who resumed at the overnight score of 73, made bulk of the runs by adding 50, but other Karnataka batsmen failed to give him support from the other end and fell to a fiery spell of Thakur, who claimed all the remaining four wickets and ended with an impressive figures of five for 86 in 29.3 overs.

“I was a little lucky, but it finally paid off. Irani hundred matters a lot, the season was very good. I did not convert starts early on but I am happy to finish it in this manner. 400 was a big lead for us. That made the difference,” Pandey said.

Rest of India struggled throughout their second innings as five batsmen — Unmukt Chand (1), Paras Dogra (0), Naman Ojha (0), Thakur (5) and Pragyan Ojha (0) — failed to reach double digit scores.

“Karnataka bowlers bowled really well. We backed our boys to do well but we didn’t have luck. Full credit to them. Good luck to them,” Rest of India captain Manoj Tiwary said.

The platform for Karnataka’s victory was set up by their batsmen. Mayank Agarwal (68), Karun Nair (59) and debutant Abhishek Reddy (54), who played crucial knocks to help Karnataka reach a respectable 244 all out in their first innings.

In reply, the visitors made 264 all out in their first innings, taking a small lead of 20 runs.

However, Karnataka put up a much improved batting effort in their second innings and it was possible due to the contributions from centurion Pandey, Ravikumar Samarth (81) and Nair (80).

Mumbai, Jan 24: Former Indian cricket captain and former MP Mohammad Azharuddin on Thursday denied allegations of cheating levelled by a travel agency in Maharashtra and threatened to file defamation suit of ₹100 crore.

"Those who filed the FIR have done it only to be in the limelight. There is no truth in it. The allegations are baseless," Azharuddin said in a video message on Twitter.

Azahruddin, who is now president of Hyderabad Cricket Association, said he would soon seek advice from his lawyer and will file Rs 100 crore defamation case against those who lodged the FIR.

A case was filed in Aurangabad on Wednesday against Azharuddin and two others for allegedly cheating a local travel agent of around ₹21 lakh.

The complaint was lodged by Shahab Y. Mohammed, 49, proprietor of Danish Tours & Travels here, a former executive with the defunct Jet Airways.

"We have lodged a first information report against Mujeeb Khan (Aurangabad), Sudheesh Avikkal (Kerala), Mohammed Azharuddin (Hyderabad). No arrests have been made and further investigations are underway," Investigating Officer A.D. Nagre, of the City Chowk police station, told IANS.

According to the complainant, between November 9 and 12, 2019, Avikkal booked several international airline tickets and Azharuddin's personal secretary Mujeeb Khan promised to pay the ticket charges. He said since no payment was made, he was compelled to lodge the police complaint.

New Delhi, Aug 2: The finals of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 will be played on November 20, the sources within the BCCI confirmed on Sunday.

The IPL's governing council met earlier today, and it has also been decided that the evening matches will start at 7:30 pm, half an hour earlier than usual.

Jay Shah, the secretary of BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and Arun Dhumal, treasurer of BCCI did not attend the IPL's governing council meeting.

"The tournament will run for 51 days, usually the IPL should go on for 49 days as per the constitution, however in the meeting it has been decided that we will go to Supreme Court for conducting the IPL in 51 days," sources within the BCCI said.

"As the tournament is running for 51 days, we will get the chance to play fewer doubleheaders, there would be just 10 double headers, evening matches will start at 7:30 and the afternoon matches will start at 3:30.

The matches will be played across three venues at Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah as travelling here by road is easier and bio-secure environment can be maintained," he added.

The IPL's governing council also confirmed that Women's IPL will also go on and four teams would be participating in it.

"When it comes to women's IPL, there would be four teams and the matches would be played at the time of playoffs for men's IPL," the source said.

The source within the BCCI also said that the governing council would be meeting again to discuss the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all the franchises that need to be followed in the IPL.

The governing council meeting discussed the quarantine measures along with the standard operating procedures (SOP), bio bubble training facilities, stay and travel of the players.

Issues related to the broadcaster, shifting, and scheduling of the tournament, and DXB app to be downloaded for players and other officials were also discussed as well.

A few days earlier, the IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel had confirmed that the 13th edition of the mega event will commence on September 19 in the UAE.

This year's IPL was slated to commence from March 29 but the tournament was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) had also confirmed receiving the official Letter of Intent from the BCCI to host the 2020 edition of the IPL.
