Manohar Parrikar quits, next Goa CM to be announced this evening

Manohar Parrikar copyNew Delhi/Goa, Nov 8: Manohar Parrikar, who is tipped to be inducted in the Union Cabinet which will be expanded on Sunday, resigned as Goa chief minister on Saturday.

Parrikar faxed his resignation to Goa governor Mridula Sinha, who is out of station.

The governor is likely to arrive in the state in time for the swearing-in ceremony of the new chief minister. The swearing-in ceremony of the next chief minister is to take place in evening.

BJP parliamentary board meets to decide new leader in Goa

The BJP parliamentary board met in Delhi on Saturday and discussed the issue of appointment of its new legislature party leader in Goa, who will replace Manohar Parrikar as the chief minister.

Party general secretary J P Nadda said that the parliamentary board discussed the political situation in Goa as well as the name of BJP nominee for a Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh.

A final decision will be announced at 4pm today, Nadda said.

The meeting was chaired by BJP president Amit Shah.

The race for the Goa chief minister's post has intensified with deputy chief minister Francis D'Souza throwing his hat into the ring while health minister Laxmikant Parsekar has emerged as the front-runner to succeed Parrikar. Names of other leaders have also been doing rounds for the position.

BJP's Goa state MLAs are also scheduled to hold a meeting at 12.30pm on the issue of choosing their new leader.

New Delhi, Mar 5: A Delhi court Thursday issued fresh death warrants for execution of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case for March 20 at 5.30 am.

Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana fixed March 20 as the new date of execution after it was told by the Delhi government that the convicts have exhausted all their legal remedies.

The lawyer for the four death row convicts also told the court that there was no legal impediment for the court to proceed in fixing the date of execution.

Kozhikode, Aug 8: A family of five, returning to their hometown at Koducalli in Kozhikode from Dubai, were aboard the fateful Air India Express flight that crash-landed at the Kozhikode airport claiming at least 18 lives on Friday.

Saifudheen, 40, is a businessman in Dubai. During the vacation when schools were closed here, his wife Fasalunnisa travelled, along with their children Muhammad Shahil, Fathima Sana and Aysha Shanza, to meet her husband.

On Friday, they were all travelling in the Air India aircraft to Kozhikode.

All five have received injuries and have been admitted to Baby Memorial Hospital Kozhikode except Sana, who is admitted to Al Shifa Hospital at Perinthalmanna in Malappuram.

"Saifudheen is my uncle. He and his family members were returning from Dubai when this unfortunate incident occurred. We were informed about the mishap at 8 pm. Now the family members have been shifted to Baby Memorial Hospital and everyone is fine now," Muhammad Salih, nephew of Saifudheen said.

The death toll in the flight crash landing incident at Kozhikode International Airport in Kerala rose to 18, including two pilots, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Saturday.

The minister said that he will visit the Kozhikode airport to take stock of the situation.

Two special relief flights have been arranged from Delhi and one from Mumbai for rendering humanitarian assistance to all the passengers and the family members.

Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Flight Safety Departments have reached to investigate the incident, the Air India Express stated.

New Delhi, Apr 29: India's tally of COVID-19 cases has reached 31,332, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday. With 73 more deaths reported, the number of deaths due to coronavirus in the country breached the 1,000 mark and stood at 1,007.

The tally is inclusive of 22,629 active coronavirus cases, 7,695 patients who have been cured/discharged and one patient migrated.

According to the Ministry, Maharashtra has the most number of COVID-19 cases with 9,318 cases of which, 1,388 patients have been cured/discharged while 400 patients have succumbed to the virus.

Gujarat has the second-highest number of positive cases in the country with 3744 cases including 434 patients cured/discharged and 181 deaths.

Delhi's tally stands at 3314 cases of which, 1078 patients have recovered while 54 patients have succumbed to the virus.

Madhya Pradesh has a total of 2387 positive cases including 377 patients recovered/discharged and 120 fatalities.

Meanwhile, Goa (seven cases; all seven recovered), Arunachal Pradesh (one case; now recovered), Manipur (two cases; both recovered), Tripura (two cases; both recovered) have reported no new cases of COVID-19.
