Mangaluru, Feb 10: A local court has awarded nine months of rigorous imprisonment to a married man for cheating a girl under the pretext of marrying her. The court also levied a fine of Rs 20,000 of which Rs 15,000 will be paid as compensation to the victim who has delivered a baby girl after she had a physical relationship with the accused. Apart from this, the convict will also have to pay Rs 1.5 lakh as compensation to the baby.

The convict is Rajesh Poojary, a resident of Patel Bagh, Mallur in Mangaluru taluk, who had befriended the 25-year-old girl from Boliyar after contacting her through WhatsApp. Though Rajesh was married and had a child, he did not disclose this fact to the girl and made her to fall in love with him.

On August 31, 2015, Poojary invited the girl to meet him at the State Bank bus terminus in Mangaluru. He came in a two-wheeler and took the girl to a lodge, and got into a physical relationship with her. They were in contact after the incident. One day, the victim told Poojary that she was pregnant, and asked him to marry her, but Poojary refused to do so, divulging that he is already married and has a kid. The victim mentioned in her complaint that he also threatened to kill her.

A police complaint was filed after the victim delivered a girl child at the government hospital in the city in May, 2016. Doctors, who learnt that she was single mother, started to enquire about it. She revealed everything to them, and a police complaint was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 376 (punishment for rape), 417 (punishment for cheating) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation).

Judith O M Crasta, public prosecutor, said that as many 23 witnesses were examined and 30 documents were produced. One of the evidences included a DNA test, which proved Rajesh as the biological father of the child. The signature at the lodge registry also matched his handwriting. The district court, after hearing the witnesses, ruled out sexual assault, terming it as consensual sex, and a case was filed several months later.

Judge D T Puttaranga Swamy of sixth additional district and sessions court declared Rajesh guilty under IPC sections 417 and 506 and awarded total rigorous imprisonment of 9 months. The court asked the victim to approach before another court to demand maintenance.

Bengaluru, July 29: The Central Crime Branch arrested four international drug peddlers belonging to Kerala and recovered drugs worth Rs 1.25 crore from them, said Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday.

"We have started a war on drugs. Our agenda is to curb the drug mafia not only in Bengaluru, but in entire Karnataka. Many people are involved in the drug mafia. They are targeting students, other states, and international students who can spend and afford to become victims," said Bommai.

The recovered items include 2,000 kg LSD strips, 110 grams MDMA Cristol, 10 ecstasy tablets, 5 kg Ganja, five cell phones, weighing machine and pouches.

"When we raided a house in Soladevanahally police station area, we arrested Shahad Mohammed, Azmal, Ajin KG Verghese and Nitin Mohan. All are from Kerala and we will arrest their contacts as well. They are involved in the dark web mafia," Bommai said.

He said the peddlers were using post offices and couriers for their business.

"I'll speak to the central government, the home ministry and postal department, and other issues related to this mafia. Canada, Netherlands, and other nations are also involved in this mafia," said the state home minister.

"People from influential backgrounds are also involved in this mafia, but our objective is zero tolerance. We are using our intelligence. Drugs are coming from other states like AP, Goa, and other states," he said.
Bommai said he was personally addressing this case and appealed for support from parents, schools and colleges.

"I'm addressing this issue personally because it's important to curb the drug mafia. I need support from schools and college managements and parents. I'll also call college and hostel managements before colleges start. We will make managements responsible," he said.

Bengaluru, April 2: At least three people have been arrested by police in connection with the attack on ASHA worker Krishnaveni in Bengaluru's Byatarayanapura area.

Earlier in the day, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said that an investigation was initiated into the incident in which ASHA workers were attacked.

"I have appointed Pulikeshi Nagar ACP, Tabarak Fathima, to investigate the matter. A case will be registered and action will be taken. ASHA workers will be protected by the police to carry out their functions," Rao told ANI here.

Earlier, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan visited one of the ASHA workers who was allegedly attacked by unidentified miscreants and termed the incident as "completely demoralising" for the workers.

ASHA workers, who were deployed to spread awareness about coronavirus and identify suspected cases, were allegedly attacked by a group of locals in Byatarayanapura here on Wednesday.

The workers said that the locals did not allow them to work and around 100 people gathered at the spot and harassed them.

This comes as the country is under a 21-day lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
