Mary KomMumbai, Aug 20: Boxing champion Mary Kom is hopeful that the film based on her life will be screened in Manipur, her home state.

She says, “We are trying very hard for this to happen, but the movies association and underground groups should allow it. It looks difficult but we will speak to the government about the same.’’

In September 2000, Revolutionary Peoples Front (RPF), which has been fighting for a separate independent socialist state of Manipur, issued a ban on the use of Hindi and the screening of Hindi films and TV shows. They even conducted raids and confiscated thousands of video cassettes of Hindi films. Several cinema halls preferred to shut down rather than face attacks by the militant group for screening Hindi films.

RPF takes up arms and fights for all the dependent and colonised people of Manipur representing the Meitei and the Nagas, the Kuki-Chins, and smaller nationalities for granting and restoration of independence and de-colonisation of the State of Manipur from the present colonial and hegemonic Administering Power of Indian, which has been occupying Manipur since 15 October, 1949, till today.

The sports star, in an interview with DNA expressed her love for Bollywood movies saying she loves watching “action masala” movies in her free time. Speaking of actress Priyanka Chopra who plays her role in the movie, she says “I don’t think anybody could have done it as well as Priyanka. Priyanka is the best actress to play me. Acting anybody can do, but boxing will be different as one needs a certain type of body structure. Priyanka suits that. Her body is very structured, like that of a boxer. I think Omung and Sanjay Leela Bhansali made the perfect choice. I really believed she can do it.”

In this ironic situation, the five time champion is in talks with the government for the release of the film in Manipur. The movie, produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali is set to release on September 5.
