Tumakuru, Jul 14: A masked man attacked a church in Tumakuru on Thursday morning, setting the door on fire.

No major damage was reported, but a portion of the wall beside the doors has turned black.

CCTV ?footage showed the vandal not being able to open the main gate and the smaller gate which were locked. He then threw a lit bottle filled with petrol at the church and fled. Soon, there was a fire at the spot.

Anoka, the sexton (who takes care of the church building), came out of his house, which is close by, when he heard a sound.

He collected water from a tap on the church premises and poured it over the fire. Three others residing on the premises helped him bring the blaze under control.

Reverend Elizabeth reached the spot after she was informed about the incident. Passersby called the police.

As news spread, several members of the community gathered at the church. Deputy Commissioner K?P?Mohan Raj, IGP (central range) Seemanth Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police Karthik Reddy and DySP Chidanandaswamy visited the spot and analysed the CCTV?footage.

Singh told reporters that five police teams have been formed to nab the suspect. Secretary of the church committee Jai Bhushan said they did not suspect anyone, but sought a speedy investigation.

Philip, a church member, said this is the first time the church has been attacked.

"We have been coming here to pray for 60 years. The church is surrounded by peace-loving citizens. We don't restrict anyone from entering. In the morning, residents living in the vicinity come to walk in the premises," he said.

The 86-year-old church is uniquely designed, bearing resemblance to a Hindu temple.

Chennai, July 25: A widow living alone in her apartment in Chennai city suburbs has filed a police complaint against ABVP national president Dr Subbiah Shanmugam, accusing him of harassment, including urinating and throwing used surgical masks at her doorstep.

Shockingly, no action has been taken so far by the police, even though the complaint against Dr Shanmugam, who is in government service, was filed on July 11 at the Adambakkam Police Station here by the widow’s relative Balaji Vijayaraghavan.

Dr Shanmugam and the 62-year-old widow were living in the same apartment complex in Nanganallur and an argument broke between them over a parking slot. “He wanted to use our parking lot. We agreed but demanded a nominal charge for using it. He was outraged by our demand and even broke our signboard at the parking lot,” Vijayaraghavan wrote in his complaint.

He also alleged that Dr Shanmugam began harassing her by throwing “pieces of chicken” outside her apartment despite knowing she is a vegetarian. Vijayaraghavan also alleged in his two-page written complaint that the ABVP National President had urinated outside the woman’s apartment gate and had been throwing garbage and used masks at her gate.

The 62-year-old woman has been living alone in her apartment for the last year following her husband’s death. In his complaint, Vijayaraghavan also said the family was “concerned about her safety”, while asking police to take action against Dr Shanmugam, who he says, “has a bad track record in maintaining rapport with neighbours.”

CCTV footage corroborates with the allegations of urinating outside the residence of the widow. However, the ABVP claimed the incident as a “malicious and derogatory propaganda” by the Congress’ student wing of NSUI.

Bengaluru, Jan 12: Janata Dal (Secular) chief and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda on Sunday refuted reports of him contesting in the Rajya Sabha elections and added that he is more concerned about strengthening his party in Karnataka.

"I am not interested in going to Rajya Sabha. My concern is to build and strengthen the party in the region to the best of my ability. I had declared earlier that I will not contest elections anymore," Deve Gowda told ANI here.

"My party MP D Kupendra Reddy is there in the Rajya Sabha as of now and further decisions will be taken by the party. In March 2019, towards the end of the 16th Lok Sabha I had declared that I will not contest any more elections," Deve Gowda added.

Four Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka are about to fall vacant in June this year as two of Congress, one of BJP and JD(S) MPs retire.
